Strahan & the West

WILDERNESS ESCAPE? GO WEST

Get off to the beaten track and go west to Tasmania’s most remote region. Holidays to Strahan and the West take you to a pocket of rich history and culture among a rugged wilderness set around 100 square miles of the natural harbour and two winding rivers. Join an escorted tour of Tasmania to experience the region’s highlight attractions or stay a few days in Strahan or Queenstown to fully immerse yourself in its stunning nature and fascinating past.

Visit the preserved sawmill on the historic harbourside esplanade of tiny Strahan. Learn the story of the ‘great escape’ at The Ship That Never Was, the town’s thrilling and hilarious family show now running for three decades. Or gaze from the shore as the sun sets into the unending ocean that separates you from the coast of South America.

Cruise the tranquil waters of the Gordon River and the vast waters of the Macquarie Harbour to discover the temperate rainforests of Heritage Landing, the dark past of Sarah Island penal colony, the lighthouse keepers tales at Bonnet Island, the historic ruins of Pillinger, and the famous fish farming industry of the harbour itself.

Ride the heritage steam train of the West Coast Wilderness Railway as it puffs and rolls its way through mountainside forest to the mining settlement of Queenstown via Dubbil Barril in the King River Gorge.

Try white water rafting, sand dune tobogganing, or rainforest zip-lining. Ride the sands in an ATV. Drive scenic roads to mountain lookouts. Or hike through forest trails to enchanting waterfall scenes.

Find yourself lost in the beauty of Tasmania’s wilderness when you add Strahan and the West to your island itinerary.
