During your time in Hout Bay, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to things to do. If you want to get a feel for the town itself, a trip to Bay Harbour Market should be top of your itinerary. Listen to live music and have a wander round the food, clothing, art and décor stalls. Follow that with a visit to one of the nearby wineries or distilleries, and you’ve got the makings of a perfect day.

If you go crazy for some epic natural scenery, Chapman’s Peak Drive is a must. Views of the rugged mountains and pristine beaches are reason enough to embark on this stunning route, but there’s also plenty of opportunity for hiking, cycling and running along the way, too.

Planning a family holiday to South Africa? Hout Bay is the perfect base. What’s more, there’s endless activities on offer for travellers of every age. Kids (and adults) can unleash their creative side at the Clay Café – hand painting pottery they can take back home. Or, they might enjoy an exciting trip to the World of Birds & Monkey Park, walking through aviaries and getting up-close to some cheeky squirrel monkeys.

Alternatively, you can relax and unwind with a family day at Hout Bay Beach. Spend time building sandcastles and paddling in the sea, before tucking into a beach-side picnic. Plus, older kids can have the chance to try out some fun watersports. From kayaking, to snorkelling and surfing, you’re spoilt for choice.   

One thing’s for sure, you won’t go hungry during your Hout Bay holiday. The whole region is known for being a bit of a foodie hub – and it’s not just fish on the menu. Although, one of the most famous eateries is the aptly-named Fish on the Rocks. You’ll find this humble chip shop right by the harbour, so you can tuck into your delicious, newspaper-wrapped meal as you watch the boats drift by.

If you’re looking for a quick pick-me-up, there are plenty of local cafes and bakeries serving freshly-roasted coffee, cakes and pastries. Or, if you’re more in the mood for a sit-down meal, you’ve got loads of options for that, too. Enjoy pizzas and hearty Italian dishes at Massimos, or treat yourself to oysters and champagne at The Lookout Deck.

There’s no bad time to book a Hout Bay holiday, but it’s hard to top a trip during South Africa’s summertime. Between December and March, sunny weather is in no short supply – perfect for days spent relaxing on the beach, or evenings spent dining al fresco. Or, if you’re planning to do lots of hiking and biking, you might fancy visiting in Spring, when the temperatures are a little cooler.

It should also be noted that Hout Bay is a bit of a hotspot when it comes to sporting events. So, whether you want to participate or simply spectate, you’ll see the region at its most lively during a race day.
