The clocks have changed, and the bees are starting to buzz. It’s time to begin dreaming of summer sun holidays. Whether you’re looking for a family trip during the school break or a couple’s escape between June and September, holidays in summer are a tradition we can all get behind. But with the whole world to choose from, where will you go?
At Travelbag, we know everyone is different. Some of us like to go where the heat is turned right up. Somewhere we can sit on a beach and let the cocktails keep us cool. Others prefer places where the temperature is better for adventures. Whichever category you fall into, we’ve got the ideal place.
To make sure you find the right destination this summer, our Travel Specialists have handpicked the world’s best destinations - some hot, others a little cooler - for summer 2024 holidays.
Are you hungry for gyros in Greece or tapas in Spain? Would you rather meet Mickey in Florida or say hello to rum punch on a Caribbean beach? How about wine tasting in California, wildlife spotting in Costa Rica, or snorkelling in the Indian Ocean? You could fly over glaciers in New Zealand, sleep under the stars at Uluru, or chase lions on safari in South Africa. Whatever your summer dreams are, we can make them real.
Ready to fly?
Just like your favourite foods, hot, extra hot, mild, and cool are all on the menu this summer. All you need to do is make an order. These are just a few suggestions from our Travel Specialists, but we’ve got a lot more to tempt you with. Call us and begin planning your summer 2024 holidays today!
One bonus of travelling from the UK for summer holidays is that you don’t have to travel far to crank up the heat. European destinations like Spain and Greece offer golden sand, beautiful towns, and fascinating history just a few hours from home. The food isn’t bad either. Follow the crowds or find something more exclusive; there’s a place among the Spanish Costas and Mediterranean islands for everyone. Stay all-inclusive in Crete, splash with the family in Majorca, or grab the perfect snaps in sophisticated Santorini. In any destination, you’re never far from beautiful beaches, historic landmarks, or a cool drink.
From Canada to the Caribbean, temperatures on the other side of the Atlantic reach their highest in July and August, and the variety of experiences is endless. Road trip along the California Coast from San Diego to San Francisco before wine tasting in the Napa Valley. Witness the geysers and hot springs in Yosemite or stand beneath the giant trees of Sequoia. Florida offers bucket list family breaks to the theme parks of Orlando, crocodile spotting in the Everglades, and upscale retreats on the Keys. For a slower pace, find a Caribbean island with an easy-going vibe and relax in the sun. Avoid the hurricane corridor by staying south around Aruba, Barbados, and Grenada. Alternatively, enjoy Costa Rica in the Green Season. You might get a little rain, but the beaches dry up quickly, and the wildlife spotting is spectacular.
When it comes to great value summer holidays, Southeast Asia is a fantastic place to start. While Northern Thailand and the Andaman Sea resorts can experience high rainfall from June to August, Koh Samui and the Gulf of Thailand stay dry until September. Combine days on the beach with a city break in Bangkok, which is intoxicating whatever the weather, for a Thailand twin-centre with big savings and fewer crowds. Further south, Malaysia enjoys hot and dry summers in both the capital of Kuala Lumpur and the orangutan haven of Borneo. The resort islands of Penang and Langkawi also offer excellent deals at this time of year. You may see some afternoon showers, but these are usually short and clear up quickly so you can enjoy the sun for the rest of the day.
If you’re a real heat worshipper, few places are hotter from June to August than the Middle East. Expect Dubai temperatures to soar over 40°C, but with the extreme sun come the annual offers. So long as you take things easy during daylight, the UAE is a wonderful place for summer holidays with half-board deals for incredible dining and perfect temperatures for sightseeing after sunset.
For milder days than the Middle East, head south into the Indian Ocean, where the Seychelles enjoy their best weather and increased plankton brings manta rays and whale sharks to the Maldives. Also in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius is an all-year, all-inclusive paradise with enchanting landscapes and world-class golf to complement its idyllic beaches. If you’re more of an explorer than a sand lover, choose a tailor-made tour of Sri Lanka to see unique temples, drive through the winding hills of the tea country, and enjoy a leopard-spotting safari among the densest elephant population in Asia.

If you prefer a slightly lower temperature, there are some cooler but equally amazing destinations which come into their own during the UK summer. With a third of its landmass in the Arctic Circle, Alaska gets very cold in the winter, so May to September is the best time to visit. Whether you’re watching whales and spotting bears, hiking in the mountains of Wrangell-St Elias and Denali, or cruising among the ice sheets of Glacier Bay, summer is a superb season for exploring Alaska.
On the other side of the world, locations at the bottom edge of the Southern Hemisphere enjoy mild and comfortable weather between June and August. Head to Cape Town in South Africa for a holiday with a thousand possibilities at a time when the days are pleasantly warm. Explore the V&A Waterfront, meet penguins at Boulders Beach, or ride the cable car to the peak of Table Mountain. Further afield, it’s just a short drive to the beautiful countryside of the Winelands, or a longer road trip takes you along the scenic Garden Route to the malaria-free Eastern Cape game reserves for Big Five safaris in ideal conditions.
Though you might need a jacket in the south coast destinations of Melbourne and Adelaide or on the island of Tasmania, every corner of Australia is ripe for exploring during the UK summer. In fact, if you’re keen to see Uluru and the natural monuments of the Red Centre or enjoy the highlights of Queensland, from the Daintree Rainforest to the Great Barrier Reef, this time of year is perfect for avoiding the hottest and most humid days. Australia flights at this time of year can be busy with families travelling to visit loved ones, so consider planning your 2025 summer holidays early.
Finally, there’s New Zealand. Here, particularly on the magnificent South Island, the dramatic landscapes appear even more spectacular when the air is crisp, and the mountains seem like they’re painted on canvas. Cruise in the beautiful bays of Milford or Doubtful Sound, rise into the frozen mountain of Aoraki from the clear blue water of Lake Tekapo or sweep across the country on the scenic TranzAlpine train. Head to the lakeside party spot of Queenstown and you could even go skiing in The Remarkables, which are exactly as their name suggests.
