LOSE YOURSELF IN LAOS

Laos is a landlocked Asian gem surrounded by China, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. Comprised of mountains, lush greenery and rolling farmland, this place may not be as well-known as some of its neighbours – but that’s all part of the charm of a holiday to Laos. You can discover the Mekong River, which flows for more than 1,000 kilometres through the country and forms a natural border with Thailand. The river is such a significant part of Laos, in fact, that you can even use it to plan your trip. Meandering along the Mekong is the perfect way to slowly explore Laos, stopping off at popular sites as you go.

Laos’ picturesque landscapes, stunning natural beauty and historical architecture make it one of Asia’s most popular backpacking destinations. You can expect to find sacred monuments and adrenaline-filled adventures, not to mention Laos’ famously pretty waterfalls. Kuang Si Falls are a must-visit during any Lao holiday. Fresh, turquoise waters tumble downwards, and you can walk right up the edge of the falls for spectacular views below. Afterwards, why not cool off by taking a dip? Or, if you’re spending some time in Vang Vieng, hike up to Nam Xay Viewpoint for panoramic, breath-taking vistas.

Caving is also a popular activity in Laos. You can discover miles of underground chambers and limestone tunnels, and even embark on a torch-lit boat trip for an eerie adventure. Or, for a truly unique activity, check out the Gibbon Experience. Part of an eco-tourism conservation project, this place allows you to trek in search of wild gibbons, as well as go zip-lining and stay in a jungle treehouse. Elsewhere, make sure you watch Buddhist monks collecting alms at sunrise as part of a sacred ceremony – it’s a fascinating Laotian experience. Alternatively, visit the Hill Tribes and learn about the age-old culture of these small, traditional villages.
