CAN-DO CAPITAL REGION

A holiday to the USA’s Capital Region will take you to the very heart of American history and politics. From the first American colonies in the 17th century, to modern-day Presidents sitting in the White House, this easterly region has seen it all. As you venture through Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia, you can discover iconic landmarks, battleground sites and world-renowned museums. And you’ll be able to explore some beautiful beaches and national parks, to boot.

Capital Region holidays are ideal for history-lovers. As the name suggests, it’s where you’ll find the USA’s capital, Washington DC – a city famous for its memorials and monuments. You can admire major sights like the Lincoln Memorial and the Capitol Building, and visit some of the fascinating Smithsonian museums and galleries. The history lesson continues in neighbouring Virginia, where you can learn about the Civil War and visit Yorktown – it was here that the American Revolution was won in 1781. And, across the state border in Maryland, the vibrant city of Baltimore is home to cultural galleries and Fort McHenry, where the USA’s national anthem was written.

While the Capital Region is best-known for its heritage, you’ll find plenty more besides. Maryland’s coastline serves up powdery beaches and tangled waterways, peppered with fishing boats and native birdlife. And the state’s largest city, Baltimore, boasts fantastic seafood restaurants, trendy boutiques and all sorts of festivals. Prefer to head to the countryside? Make tracks for Virginia’s pristine forests, such as Shenandoah National Park, or hop between some of the state’s 300 vineyards

However you want to spend your time, our Capital Region holidays tick all the boxes – and your trip can be tailored entirely to suit you. Speak to our Travel Specialists to find out more.

Washington DC

Naturally, most Capital Region holidays start in Washington DC. The USA’s capital city is synonymous with significant landmarks and fascinating museums, so it’s the ideal place to learn more about America’s history. Walk the length of the National Mall to see the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the World War Two Memorial and the Capitol Building. Other must-see sites – like the Martin Luther King Jr Memorial and the White House – are within easy reach, too.

Washington DC is also home to the Smithsonian Institute, which is made up of 17 museums, galleries and a zoo. Each one is completely free to enter, so you can go to as many as you please. Spend some time at the National Museum of American History, learn about otherworldly achievements at the National Air and Space Museum, or take the kids to the National Zoo.

After a busy day of sightseeing, why not immerse yourself in DC’s thriving nightlife scene? Beer connoisseurs will love the city’s craft breweries, while cocktail-drinkers can enjoy a sundowner with a view at one of the many rooftop bars. There’s something here for everyone, including comedy clubs, live music venues and gay bars – DC is home to one of the USA’s largest LGBT+ communities.

Virginia holidays

If you’re into history, it’s definitely worth venturing into Virginia on your trip to the Capital Region. This state was the birthplace of two of America’s ‘Founding Fathers’ – Thomas Jefferson and George Washington – and also saw a number of Civil War battles. Follow the five Civil War Trails across the state to tick off key sites and battlefields. Visit Yorktown, where the American Revolution was won. Or step back in time at Colonial Williamsburg, where tours and theatrical re-enactments bring 18th-century history to life.

But there’s a lot more to Virginia than cultural attractions. With landscapes ranging from rolling hills to neat vineyards, this place offers a variety of adventures. Why not spend some time exploring Shenandoah National Park? Part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this protected area has dozens of hiking trails, allowing you to discover its forests, waterfalls and wildlife. And, when you feel like putting your feet up, simply make your way to one of Virginia’s 300 wineries and distilleries.

Maryland holidays

Often referred to as “America in Miniature”, compact Maryland is best-known for its coastline and waterways, along with its reputation for fantastic fresh seafood. Chesapeake Bay is particularly popular and is definitely worth a visit during your Capital Region holiday. You can take a boat trip to discover the maze of rivers and marshlands, dotted with fishing villages and maritime museums. Or go for a stroll along one of the boardwalks in search of wild herons and bright lighthouses.

Maryland’s biggest city, Baltimore, should also be on your list. It was here that Francis Scott Key penned America’s national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner” – but this dynamic city is also famous for its cultural sites. Bookworms will enjoy visiting the Poe House and Museum, while art aficionados should check out the Baltimore Museum of Art. Foodies will be in their element, too, as Baltimore has a brilliant dining scene. You’ll see Maryland blue crab on menus across the city – it’s in everything from crab cakes to crab chowder – and there a number of food festivals throughout the year, covering everything from beer and wine, to seafood and jazz.

Best time to go

There’s never bad time for a holiday to the USA’s Capital Region. But, depending on your interests, some seasons are better than others. Temperate spring is ideal for nature-lovers, as you can hike through Virginia’s national parks in comfort, before the summer heat arrives. Plus, Washington DC’s cherry blossoms burst into bloom in late-March, so you can stroll along the Memorial Trail surrounded by candyfloss-like clouds. Autumn has a similar climate – with temperatures hovering in the low-to-mid-twenties – but, instead of pink, the trees across the Capital Region turn orange and red.

Prefer some sunshine? Plan your trip between June and August. Temperatures average 30°C at this time of year, although the humidity can make it feel warmer. It’s the perfect time to discover Maryland’s beaches and bays, sip wine in Virginia’s vineyards, and make the most of DC’s fantastic dining scene. Winter is best avoided, as temperatures regularly fall below freezing.
