Memphis Holidays

Memphis made easy

Memphis holidays are sure to get your feet tapping. In the southwest corner of Tennessee, this city is the home of rock ‘n’ roll and the blues. It’s steeped in music and history, and is a vibrant medley of styles. Make sure you use your time wisely, as there’s a lot to see in this sprawling city. From museums and parks, to Beale Street’s lively nightlife, to the duck parade at the Peabody Hotel, there’s plenty to do on your Memphis getaway.

Memphis was famously home to the King himself, Elvis Presley – and no trip to Memphis would be complete without a visit to his home, Graceland. Make sure you also spend some time at Sun Studios where Elvis, Johnny Cash and B.B. King all recorded some of their most famous music. And you can even sing into Elvis’s mic. And why not further immerse yourself in Memphis’ musical history at one of the city’s museums? We love the Stax Museum of American Soul Music and the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum.

There’s a lot more to a Memphis holiday than music, though. This corner of the USA has its fair share of history. Make sure you visit the National Civil Rights Museum to learn more about the journey from slavery to the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement. Even the location is significant – you’ll find the museum within the Lorraine Motel, where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968.

When you fancy a break from the city, head to the beautiful Memphis Botanic Gardens or spend a day in Shelby Farms Park – an incredible green space that’s five times larger than New York’s Central Park. And, naturally, your Memphis holiday must include some of the city’s famous Southern cuisine. Barbecue-lovers will be in Heaven – think fried chicken, sticky ribs, pulled pork and so much more.

Whether you’re an Elvis fan or not, no trip to Memphis would be complete without a visit to Graceland, the home of the King. Just 10 miles south of the city, Graceland is one of the most-visited private homes in the whole of the USA. You’ll be able to see Elvis’ famous jungle room, record collection, car and plane collections, and the clothes he adorned throughout his career. Don’t worry if you don’t have a hire car – there are lots of bus tours available.

And we can’t talk about Memphis holidays without mentioned the famous Sun Studios. Here, big stars like Elvis, Johnny Cash, B.B. King and Roy Orbison recorded some of their most iconic tunes, and it’s often referred to as the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll. And if you want to hear some of that famous Southern sound in action, head to Beale Street. The heart of Memphis’ music scene, this part of Downtown is home to the city’s best blues bars and lively nightlife to boot.
