One of Vietnam’s most vibrant and charismatic cities, Da Nang sits right in the centre of the country. Modern and sleek in appearance, with origins dating back as early as 192AD, it serves up excitement and intrigue in equal measure. Pair that with the breath-taking natural surroundings, and it’s easy to see what makes Da Nang such a well-loved destination.
Nestled along Vietnam’s coastline, looking out to the East Vietnam Sea, Da Nang’s city centre is a joy to explore. Here, you’ll find countless examples of unique and innovative architecture. The most photographed, perhaps, is the 9,000-tonne Dragon Bride that illuminates each evening in shades of fiery gold. The towering skyscrapers that hover above the city’s white-sand beach are also impressive, casting their reflection over the silky water. But, at Da Nang’s heart, lies the ever-humble Han Market. Here, among rows of street-food vendors and souvenir stalls, you can enjoy being swept along by the city’s ever-changing rhythm.
Alternatively, if you’re in search of some peace and tranquillity, you won’t have to travel far. With miles of sprawling, emerald mountains serving as its backdrop, Da Nang is the ideal starting point for an adventure through the magnificent Vietnamese countryside. Hop on a motorcycle or join an escorted day tour to the Marble Mountains to see the sacred, candle-lit caves. Or, take a cable car up to Golden Bridge and snap a photo of the giant, outstretched hands that rest beneath this mighty structure.
With countless more beaches, temples, hot springs and parks for you to discover, and endless mountain scenery for you to get lost in, your trip to Da Nang promises to be utterly amazing. There are plenty of things to in Da Nang. From the markets and museums, to the city’s many iconic landmarks, you won’t be spending much time standing still. A fantastic way to begin your adventure is by visiting the majestic Golden Bridge. Located at the top of Ba Na Hills Resort, two mighty hands lift this 150-metre-long bridge high above the mountain landscape.
An equally-beautiful, but considerably older, landmark to visit during your trip is the iconic Marble Mountains. Here, a network of silent caves and tunnels connect five ancient mountains. Transformed into remarkable worship sites, the caves house sacred shrines and impressive Buddhist statues that cast shadows on the cool, marble floor. Step inside and marvel at this historical treasure, before dropping by the ornate Linh Ung Pagoda.
It’s no secret that Vietnam is a popular spot for backpackers and solo travellers. But, it’s also a fantastic family holiday destination, with the city of Da Nang being no exception. Right in the city centre, Asia Park provides ample amounts of fun for visitors of any age. Test your nerve as you tackle Vietnam’s largest rollercoaster, the Queen Cobra. Or, enjoy panoramic views of the city on the Sun Wheel.
Da Nang also has its fair share of family-friendly beaches. A solid favourite is My Khe Beach, with its power-soft sand and nearby cafes and restaurants. It’s a spot that’s popular with locals, and the calm water is perfect for a paddle or swim. Alternatively, if you fancy somewhere a little quieter, you can take a two-minute drive to Non Nuoc Beach – a glorious stretch backed by the towering Marble Mountains.
If you fancy getting out of the city and exploring some of Da Nang’s incredible countryside, you might want to think about hiring a motorbike. They’re the main mode of transport in Vietnam, so it’s a great option if you want to experience living like a local. And, when you visit Da Nang, you’ll have the iconic Hai Van Pass on your doorstep. Winding 500 metres above sea level, this Top Gear-featured road provides end-to-end views that will take your breath away.
For a shorter journey, you can make the drive from Da Nang city centre up to Son Tra Mountain – or Monkey Mountain, as it’s sometimes called. A steep passage with lots of twists and turns, it’s any adrenaline-junkie’s dream.
One of the great things about Da Nang is that it’s t-shirt weather all year round. The hottest month, June, is known to reach highs of 36°C, whilst the coldest month, December, only experiences lows of 20°C. In Vietnam, there isn’t really a winter and summer. Instead, the year is split into a wet and dry season. If you’re wanting to spend time on the beach, getting stuck into snorkelling and watersports, then the wet season – September to December – is best avoided.
Peak season in Da Nang is June to August. And, whilst these months are the busiest, there are lots of fun events going on for you to get involved in. Watch kaleidoscopic displays at the International Fireworks Festival, or drop by the city’s annual food and beer festival.
