Shared with Indiana, Illinoi and Wisconsin, Lake Michigan is one of the state’s top attractions. Although, there’s plenty to do along the Michigan side alone. Head out on an exciting road trip to explore the many beaches, sand dunes and parks dotted along the lake’s shoreline. Discover wineries in Leland, tulip fields in Holland, and the thriving art scene in Saugatuck.

If you only have time to visit one destination during your Michigan holiday, Mackinac Island is the place to go. Located at the top of Lake Huron, this quaint and colourful town is home to historic forts, pristine golf courses and the naturally-formed Arch Rock. Take a tranquil boat trip over the water, or sample some fudge in one of the shops downtown.

Planning a winter holiday to Michigan? Then, you might want to spend some time skiing over at Mount Bohemia. It’s a total haven for thrill-seekers, with 90 black diamond runs scattered across the mountain. Although, if you prefer more chilled-out activities, there’s plenty to do here, too. Relax at the Nordic spa, or join a wellness-focused yoga retreat and soak up the stunning, mountain scenery.

Another hotspot for natural beauty is the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Get stuck into wildlife-watching, hiking, and island-hopping, or explore one of the breath-taking state parks. Get lost in ancient forests at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Or see the 48-foot waterfall at Tahquamenon Falls State Park.

Sitting right beside the Canadian border, Michigan’s capital, Detroit offers a change of pace from the small towns around Lake Michigan. Particularly good for a rainy day, the city is home to a number of fantastic museums and galleries. The Detroit Institute of Arts should be your first stop. Search for the Van Gough self-portrait, before taking a look at their impressive modern art collection.

Seen as the centre of the US automobile industry, Detroit is a go-to destination for car enthusiasts, young and old. Learn about the fascinating history and check out some incredible motors over at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation. Then, you can follow that up with a bite to eat at one of the city’s top-class restaurants or bars.

Autumn is one of the best times to go on your Michigan holiday. The state parks and wooded areas around the lakes are bursting with colour, and the mild temperatures are ideal if you’re planning to spend lots of time outdoors.
Summer is another great time to visit the ‘Great Lake State’. You’ll be able to take your pick from a range of exciting festivals and events. And, the warm and sunny weather makes activities like hiking, kayaking, biking and swimming even more enjoyable.

On the other hand, winter also has its perks. There’s lots of fun to be had skiing at Mount Bohemia. And, elsewhere in Michigan, there are plenty of thrilling, cold-weather activities to try, such as snow-shoeing, fat tyre-biking and ice-climbing up frozen waterfalls.
