Northern Canada

Northwest Territories

NORTHWEST TERRITORIES? NO PROBLEM.

Nearly twice the size of Texas – sandwiched between the equally-expansive territories of Yukon and Nunavut – Northern Canada’s Northwest Territories is the place to go if you’re after a taste of Arctic wilderness. From the sharply carved canyons of the Nahanni to the staggering power of the 100-foot-high Alexandra Falls, a trip here promises non-stop drama.

The Norwest Territories might be down as a remote destination, but make no mistake, this particular territory is packed with excitement. Often dubbed as a ‘polar Serengeti’, endless wildlife-viewing opportunities await across this vast landscape. Whether it’s the herds of bison and musk oxen that plod along the icy plains, the grizzly bears that roam the Dempster Highway, or the friendly beluga whales that splash around the Husky Lakes, keeping a camera at close reach is a must throughout your holiday here.

Despite its well-warranted status as an unmatched photography destination, a trip to the Northwest Territories is all about the experience. There’s no shortage of epic things to do during the territory’s coldest months, from dogsledding across frozen lakes to sky-gazing beneath the ethereal Northern Lights. Then, in the summertime, the midnight sun comes into play, allowing you to soak up immense scenery every hour of the day - canoeing, kayaking and hiking into the small hours, if you please. But above all, the people of the Northwest Territories will make your holiday truly unforgettable. No matter what time of year you visit, discovering the rich history of this wild land and that of its First Nations custodians is a must.

From cultural experiences to snow-centric expeditions, there really is no limit to what you can do on a holiday to Canada’s Northwest Territories. Ready to start planning your Arctic adventure? Simply give our Travel Specialist a call.

Yellowknife was officially founded in 1934, thanks to the gold-mining boom, which was short-lived. The city underwent another boom in the 90s when diamonds were discovered nearby. You can visit the Northwest Territories Diamond Centre to learn all about the discovery and production of rough diamonds to polished jewellery.
