Things to do

CAN-DO COSTA RICA

Smaller than Scotland, Costa Rica’s petite size contradicts its sheer amount of natural wonders. This beautiful country is nowhere near the size of some of its South American neighbours, yet it’s home to all sorts of incredible landscapes. Costa Rica holidays serve up endless outdoor adventures, whether you’re exploring tropical rainforests and tangled mangroves, discovering postcard-worthy beaches, or hiking up volcanic peaks. And you’ll be amazed by Costa Rica’s wildlife. Unbelievably, this pint-sized gem is home to five percent of the planet’s animal species.

Nature-lovers will be in their element on a Costa Rica holiday. More than a quarter of the country’s land is protected, so you can expect to see Mother Nature at her very best. In Arenal National Park, you can enjoy a guided trek through lush jungle in search of monkeys, deer and a variety of colourful birds, and watch steam rising from the perfectly cone-shaped Arenal Volcano. Go kayaking through Tortuguero National Park’s waterways looking for caimans and turtles, or make tracks for Manuel Antonio National Park to see sloths, toucans and howler monkeys. Want to get your adrenaline pumping? Brave the canopy bridges and zip-lines in the scenic Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, or go white-water rafting in La Fortuna.

Costa Rica holidays tend to be pretty action-packed, as there’s so much to do. But, when you do fancy some downtime, you’ll have lots of knockout beaches to choose from. Costa Rica is lucky enough to be brushed by two oceans – the Caribbean Sea to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The east coast is generally best for diving, while the west has perfect conditions for surfing. If you’re heading to the Caribbean coast, you can snorkel among corals at Punta Uva, or kayak through turquoise waters at Manzanillo Beach. Alternatively, head west to discover some of Costa Rica’s most famous beaches. Tamarindo is a haven for surfers, while Manuel Antonio Beach boasts sugar-white sands, rich corals and a crystal-clear sea.

To top it all off, this place has a wonderful mantra, Pura Vida, which means ‘pure life’. You’ll hear and see this phrase a lot during your Costa Rica holiday, reminding you to relax and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. And, once you’ve discovered the country’s magnificent scenery and jaw-dropping wildlife, it’s impossible to argue with.
