Ruaha National Park Holidays

READY, SET, RUAHA!

As Tanzania’s largest National Park, Ruaha boasts excellent wildlife-watching opportunities in and amongst a breathtakingly beautiful landscape of vast open spaces and rolling hills. You’ll immediately notice the giant, ancient baobab trees dotted around the park, and you’ll certainly want to witness the Great Ruaha River elegantly flowing along the park’s border. This park is a huge 7,809 square miles, and it’s perfect if you’re looking for a quieter, off-the-beaten-track safari experience with its tranquil, unspoilt surroundings.

It’s fair to say that Ruaha National Park is any wildlife enthusiast’s paradise! This park is unrivalled for spotting predators, as there are huge populations of lions, leopards and cheetahs. Not to mention the 10,000 elephants, 30,000 buffaloes and 20,000 zebras who call this park their home. If you choose to game drive through this impressive park, prepare to be in awe of the incredible animals surrounding you. The sights are especially captivating during the dry season, between May and October, when many animals congregate to drink from the Ruaha River.

Looking for a rare animal sighting? You’ve found it at Ruaha. This is one of the best places in East Africa to encounter the wild dog. There are also several rare antelope species in Tanzania, such as the kudu, roan and sable antelope; excitingly, these can all be spotted in this park. Aside from the fascinating animals, the main attraction is the Great Ruaha River, surrounded by heaps of miombo woodland – a sparse, open dry grassland that produces new leaves before the wet season.

You can experience all of this incredible natural beauty for yourself with a stay at one of the luxury camps and lodges nearby. What could be better? Spectacular animal sightings through the day, followed by a relaxed, comfortable stay in a stylish lodge with epic views in the evening.

Whether you’re looking for a stand-alone trip or you fancy adding on another destination, our Travel Specialists can help you plan the ultimate safari holiday. Simply give us a call to find out more.

Best time to go

Typically, this is a dry park. But the best time to visit Ruaha is between June and October. This is because the summer is a prime time to watch the animals gather around the Ruaha River when there is practically no rainfall. As the parks dry out, the bushes become thinner, making the animals much easier to spot! And as for the weather, the daytime temperatures are consistently in the late 20s to the early thirties.

The wet season here is between November to April. During this time, the park turns a luscious, bright green as the plants and vegetation are hydrated from the rain. However, the wildlife can become much harder to spot. This time of year is still incredibly hot, reaching temperatures around 32°C.

It’s important to note that most camps are shut in May - so it’s best to plan your holiday around that time.
