Uncover Namibia’s journey from colonialism to independence through Windhoek’s museums and landmarks
Sample city life before exploring dunes, canyons, and beaches on an unforgettable Namibian safari
Like many African countries, Namibia is famous for its incredible wilderness and wildlife safaris, but holidays to Windhoek prove there’s more to Namibia than that.
Arrive at Hosea Kutako International Airport and check into your city accommodation an hour later ready to explore the vibrant capital city at your door. Windhoek has all you’d expect from a major city. Discover shops, boutiques, markets, galleries, and museums. Dine in cafés and restaurants offering local fare and international favourites. Wander scenic parks and old town architecture. Find an energetic nightlife with a choice of entertainment and drinking spots from brewery beer houses to inviting cocktail bars.
Animal lovers and young travellers will love getting up close to wildlife with experiences from horse riding to giraffe feeding and a selection of game reserves and ranches just outside the city.
Walk by the Tintenpalast parliament buildings on Robert Mugabe Avenue to find the historic Lutheran Christuskirche. Visit Alte Feste, home to Windhoek’s first German garrison. And learn the story of Namibia’s struggle for racial freedom at the Independence Memorial Museum.
A stay in Windhoek is a great way to mix a safari trip with a city break or to rest and acclimatise after a long journey. Families will enjoy the convenience of staying in a modern city with kid-friendly activities on their doorstep. Couples will love the chance to wine, dine, and shop between safari adventures.
Add an extra night or two to your itinerary and discover why Windhoek is much more than a gateway city to Namibia’s national parks.
History, culture, entertainment, and tranquil moments are all on offer when you visit Namibia’s capital city of Windhoek. See the 4.5 billion-year-old Gibeon meteorite fragments in the Post Street Mall. Browse stalls, bookshops, leatherwork shops, and cafés at the Namibia Craft Centre in the Old Breweries Complex. Gather local produce at the Saturday market. Cycle around Katutura township and taste traditional kapana in the township’s bustling marketplace.
Look across the city from Three Circles on Lover’s Hill, or the "Balcony of Love" at the top of the Independence Memorial Museum. Explore the nation’s creative and political past at the National Museum and the National Art Gallery. Take a refreshing stroll through the Botanic Garden or Parliament Gardens. With the family? Kids will love Zoo Park.
Stay in Windhoek and discover a thriving city of blended cultures. Take an architectural tour and visit the Lutheran Art Nouveau Christuskirche, the neoclassical facade of the Tintenpalast, and the Cape Dutch-style building of Windhoek Railway Station. See the controversial courtyard of Alte Feste, the bronze statue that guards the entrance to the Independence Memorial Museum, and the explosion of colour within the halls of the National Art Gallery.
Enjoy relaxed mornings wandering Zoo Park, Parliament Gardens and the National Botanic Garden. Rummage for souvenirs at the Namibia Craft Centre or treats at the Kenneth Kaunda Street market. Dive into the city’s nightlife with a meal in one of many local restaurants or a drink in its beer houses and brewery bars.
You don’t need to tour the wilderness to see wildlife in Namibia. Stay in Windhoek and discover a choice of reserves just minutes from the city. Visit Daan Viljoen, the smallest game reserve in Namibia and spot desert-adapted oryx, steenbok, klipspringer, giraffe, zebra, and over 200 colourful bird species as you explore the predator-free park on foot, mountain bike, or by off-road vehicle. Search for birdlife on the scenic trails of the Avis Dam Nature Reserve at the eastern edge of town.
Feed giraffes at Voigtland Guesthouse. Meet Africa’s most fearsome predators at Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary. See zebras, wildebeest, crocodiles, and rhinos at Okapuka Ranch. Explore the countryside on horseback before returning for a champagne brunch at Elisenheim Guest Farm. Whether you stay for a day, or a week, animal lovers will never be bored in Namibia’s gateway city.
Summer in Windhoek is December to February and temperatures can soar to 35°C but rainfall is also at its highest. Even at this time, short downpours are most common, leaving plenty of dry hours for exploration while the rains bring new life to the countryside around the city. June to August is winter, during which time temperatures can range from 20°C during the day to less than 5°C overnight.
October and November offer the longest daylight hours and if you’re combining your city stay with a safari the best game viewing is from July to September in Etosha while Namib-Naukluft and the Skeleton Coast offer strong viewing all year round. Pack for the time of year every day is a good time to enjoy the city of Windhoek.
