Staying at a luxury safari lodge at the heart of the park is a magical way to immerse yourself in the landscapes and wildlife of Africa, but it’s not for everyone. Maun offers an alternative way to enjoy the incredible ecosystems of the Okavango Delta, Makgadikgadi Pans, and the Kalahari Desert. Use this bustling airport town as your base and you can enjoy your safaris by day along with the attractions and conveniences of the city by night.

Daily game viewing is available by land, river cruise, or scenic flight from this cultural hub filled with art, restaurants, bars, and all the shopping you could wish for. Choose a boutique lodge or hotel at the heart of the city’s streets and enjoy incredible access to a wider range of experiences than any camp or wilderness lodge could ever offer.

Maun is the gateway to Okavango Delta. Stay for a time on the banks of the Thamalakane River at the southern edge of Botswana's unique desert wetland before venturing onward to enjoy 6,000 square miles of the world’s largest intact delta. Search out the “Big Five'' African safari animals by 4WD guided tour, ranger-led hike, on horseback, or even by self-drive.

Cruise down the clear waters of the delta on a traditional Mokoro canoe or motorised boat. Visit local villages to discover the ancient cultures of the delta’s indigineous residents. Once you’ve explored every corner of the Okavango Delta, travel north to Chobe, or south to the Kalahari, and introduce yourself to all that spectacular and diverse Botswana has to offer.

Maun, as with the region surrounding it, transforms from wet summer to dry winter in April and switches back again around November. Summers are humid as the rainfall brings new life to the area and daytime temperatures average around 25°C. Winters are cooler, usually around 15°C during the day and chilly overnight, but the days stay dry and cloudless skies allow for incredible stargazing away from the city lights.

The urban activities of Maun can be enjoyed all year round but, for those wanting the best game viewing, the summer months are often recommended for the widest diversity of wildlife. Other key dates to consider are Easter, for the huge festival surrounding the Mascom Derby horse race, and October-November for the Maun International Arts Festival.
