Long celebrated as one of the Happiest Places in America, San Luis Obispo should definitely be on your list. With thousands of acres of protected open space, tons of hikes with breath-taking views, and a Downtown filled with historic architecture, this place has it all. And there's a youthful energy, thanks to its university influences.

SLO (as the locals call it) is just minutes away from pastoral Edna Valley wine country and the beach towns along Highway 1. So it's the perfect base to explore the region's eclectic shops, hip eateries, museums, dynamic nightlife, and weekly farmers market.

In Paso Robles, cowboy country meets wine country. This fertile region boasts a bounty of craft breweries, distilleries, olive oil artisans, farm-to-table fare, and fine-dining in Paso’s charming Downtown. Discover the Field of Lights at Sensorio, or play 18 holes on one of the many golf courses. You can go hiking or biking, or slow the pace down with a visit to an art gallery and museum.

For many, though, Paso is all about wine. These vine-draped hills are the perfect place for more than 40 grape varieties to ripen to perfection. Take your pick from nearly 250 tasting rooms, where you can meet friendly winemakers and farmers, and hear about their passion for produce great wines. Welcome to the classic California beach. The towns of Pismo Beach and Shell Beach can be found off Highway 1, just a few miles from the town of San Luis Obispo. These two towns may share the same coastline, but they have a very distinct personality. Shell Beach is the perfect spot to kick back and watch the local wildlife, including migrating whales and pods of dolphins.

Pismo Beach, meanwhile, is a unique stretch of coast offering endless activities. Kayaking, hiking, horseback riding and fishing are all part of the Pismo Beach experience. But, as many visitors will tell you, it's great to simply breathe in the fresh sea air, kick back on the warm sands, and stroll along the iconic pier.

An active fishing town, Morro Bay is a hive of activity, especially in the busy harbour where you can catch a glimpse of sea lions and sea otters frolicking in the bay. Join in the fun by paddle-boarding or kayaking, or hop aboard a larger vessel for a whale-watching trip or a sunset cruise. You'll also be able to see one of the most iconic landmarks on the Pacific Coast, Morro Rock. 

Rich in history, Morro Rock is commonly referred to as the ‘Gibraltar of the Pacific’. In 1542, a Portuguese explorer named the rock ‘El Morro’ which loosely means 'crown-shaped hill'. This extinct volcano is the anchor of the bay, and a popular haunt of the local sea otters, sea lions and harbour seals.
