Whatever you’re interested in, you’ll find plenty of things to do on your Mexico honeymoon. If you’re a pair of nature lovers, why not spend a day snorkelling with tropical fish and turtles on the Great Mayan Reef? The second-biggest reef on Earth, it stretches for over 1,000 kilometres. Or, if you’d prefer to stay dry, take a trip to Mexico’s rich forests in search of exotic birds, howler monkeys and ocelots.

Alternatively, if you’re a couple who loves thrilling activities, head to Selvatica. Half way between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, this place offers zip-lining, suspended walkways, off-roading and more. Or, for a truly experience, you could go cave diving in one of Mexico’s many underground cenotes.

Seeking some culture on your Mexico honeymoon? Spend a day exploring the age-old ruins of Chichen Itza or Tulum, where you’ll be able to see stunning Mayan pyramids and temples. And, if you want to visit a very unusual exhibition, hop in a glass-bottomed boat and sail out to MUSA – a submerged museum filled with dozens of sculptures and statues.

While there’s undoubtedly a lot to do in Mexico, there are also plenty of beautiful beaches where you can simply chill out and spend time together as newlyweds. If you’re staying in Cancun, you’ll have 22 kilometres of sand to choose from. The northern coast’s calm waters are ideal for swimming, while the easterly beaches offer a range of watersports. You could also venture further afield and book a day trip to idyllic Isla Mujeres – a lovely island just eight miles from the mainland, where you can snorkel in the Caribbean Sea and curl up on picture-perfect beaches.

Riviera Maya has some great sunbathing spots, too. If you’re looking for a long swathe of palm-dotted sand and plenty of restaurants, Playa del Carmen ticks all the boxes. Meanwhile, laidback Puerto Morelos is the perfect choice for a relaxing, crowd-free day by the ocean. But if you want to be waited on hand-and-foot, head to Serenity Beach Club on Xpu-Ha Beach. You can sip cocktails and feast on fantastic food in this swanky beach bar, as you admire the white sands and turquoise sea beyond.

Tropical Mexico stays warm throughout the year, but some months see much better weather than others. December to April is the best time to go to Mexico, as it’s the driest time of year and temperatures hover in the high twenties. As you’d expect, though, this sun-soaked season is also the most expensive.

If you’re looking to save on your Mexico honeymoon, consider going in May or November. May is very hot, with temperatures averaging 32^oC. Cooler November is the tail-end of hurricane season, but you can expect plenty of sunshine and lovely lush greenery. Mexico’s hurricane season officially runs from June to November, but September and October are the wettest months – so it’s best to avoid going at this time of year.
