Holidays to K’gari (Fraser Island)

SAY G’DAY TO K’GARI

K’gari, as it was named by its Butchulla custodians, means simply “Paradise” – and when you see the island, you’ll understand why. Previously known as Fraser Island, K’gari boasts a 75-mile-long beach, inland rainforest, wildlife-filled scrub, crystal-clear lakes, and absolutely no roads. So, when you go on holiday to Fraser Island, you can expect to discover some of Australia’s most untouched landscapes.

K’gari holidays have something for everyone. Families will love the seemingly endless beach, safe swimming in freshwater lakes and creeks, and exciting Australian wildlife. Adventure-seekers will enjoy bouncing over dunes in a 4x4 – the only type of vehicle allowed on the island. And couples can look forward to a romantic escape among sand-lined lakes and rainforest trails.

Explore the island on a 4WD tour, take scenic flight, or tackle the picturesque hiking routes. There are loads of trails – so you can enjoy a gentle stroll for an hour, or search every nook over a week-long trek. See incredible sand cliffs and rock pool formations. Look out for whales, sharks and turtles. Spot parrots, cockatoos and sea eagles. Walk among dingoes, kangaroos and possums. And search the rusting ruins of an 85-year-old shipwreck marooned on the vast sands.

You can reach this UNESCO-listed island by taking a short ferry ride from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach on the Queensland coast. Or you can fly direct from Hervey Bay, Sunshine Coast, or Brisbane. There’s a number of ways to explore, too. You can book an inclusive adventure, a romantic trip for two, or a wildlife package with Kingfisher Bay Eco Resort – or take your pick from one of the chilled-out camping grounds. Speak to our Travel Specialists to find out more, then get ready to bike, hike, camp, swim, fish, or simply relax on an island adventure like no other.

Things to do on K'gari

Choose your adventure among the sand, woodland, lakes, and wildlife of K’gari. Dip your toes, or indeed your whole body, into 200 freshwater lakes and creeks. Stretch out in the sun at Boorangoora, find a little solitude at Lake Birrabeen, or swim among the fish at Lake Wabby.

Splash into the flowing waters of Eli Creek, which is perfect for bobbing along in inflatables. Stroll along the boardwalk and enjoy views from the wooden bridge connecting one tree-lined bank to another. Explore rainforest trails at Central Station, the former headquarters of K’Gari’s logging industry.

Take in all the island has to offer on the eight-day Great Walk trek, or witness it in just 15 minutes on a thrilling scenic flight. And, on all your adventures, keep your eyes peeled for all sorts of creatures, including cockatoos, parrots, dingoes, sugar gliders, flying foxes, and sea eagles. Or, from a waterside perch, look across the ocean for dolphins, stingrays, turtles, sharks, and even humpback whales.

75 Mile Beach

The only cars on K’gari are 4WD, and the only highway is 75 Mile Beach – a stretch of sand which runs from Hook Point to Indian Head. It’s so long and wide that light aircraft also use it as a runway. Driving on the soft sand with scrub-covered hills on one side and the Coral Sea on the other is the best way to get around – and it's some of the most fun you can have on four wheels.

Spot the colourful Pinnacles sand cliffs, the bubbling Champagne Pools among the beachside rocks, and the enchanting Eli Creek, perfect for splashing around. Stand beside the Maheno Shipwreck, a stricken trans-Tasman liner that has been decaying on the sand since 1935. Share the beach with wild dingoes, and keep an eye out for humpback whales and tiger sharks in the rolling waves.

Best time to visit K'gari

There’s never a bad time for a holiday to Fraser Island. Winter – which runs from June to August – is a pleasant time to go, when temperatures range between 15°C and 25°C. It’s the perfect time for outdoor activities, as there’s little-to-no rain. And it’s also when the island has its best fishing conditions.

Temperatures rise through the spring months of September, October, and November, which generally remain dry. Summer, from December to February, is the hottest time of year, when temperatures often exceed 30°C. It can also be very humid and rainy. Most showers dry up quickly, but some rains do last longer at this time of year.

Dryer days return through March, April, and May when temperatures begin to fall once more towards the beginning of winter. For whale-watchers, migration brings these magnificent creatures to K'Gari shores between August and October most years.
