For chimpanzee and monkey trekking, the best time to visit Nyungwe Forest is the long dry season from June to September. Both movement and viewing are easier at this time when the terrain is firmer underfoot and the foliage is lighter. The shorter dry season of mid-December to Mid-February can also offer excellent conditions though some showers are to be expected.

Rains are heaviest between March and May and October to November, but you can still enjoy many activities in Nyungwe Forest at this time. Though it is more challenging during the wet season, wildlife trekking takes place all year round. Birdwatchers should book their trip between October and May for the best chance to spot the highest diversity of native species.
