Nyungwe Forest Holidays

CANOPIES AND CHIMPANZEES

Meet our closest genetic cousins when you trek to find chimpanzees on your Nyungwe Forest holidays. Home to 13 distinct species, Rwanda offers some of the best primate viewing in the world and Nyungwe is at its heart.

Animal lovers will be in paradise with dozens of native mammals from mongooses and impalas to elephants and buffaloes alongside more than 300 species of birds which make the trees their home. Explore the jungle floor on scenic hiking trails or take a look from 50 metres above on the boards of the only canopy walk in East Africa. For even more stunning views, take the challenge of a full-day expedition to the summit of Mount Bigugu.

With trekking restricted to visitors aged 15 and above, Nyungwe is an ideal destination for families with older children or nature-loving adults. Luxury accommodation is available at the One&Only Nyungwe House for the perfect romantic escape.

Nyungwe Forest is reachable by a five-hour drive from Kigali or just an hour from Kamembe Airport at the southern tip of Lake Kivu. The One&Only Nyungwe House offers 30-minute helicopter transfers from Kigali International Airport.

Make your visit to Rwanda a complete wildlife experience when you add Nyungwe Forest to a Volcanoes National Park mountain gorilla adventure and an Akagera National Park safari.

Best time to visit

For chimpanzee and monkey trekking, the best time to visit Nyungwe Forest is the long dry season from June to September. Both movement and viewing are easier at this time when the terrain is firmer underfoot and the foliage is lighter. The shorter dry season of mid-December to Mid-February can also offer excellent conditions though some showers are to be expected.

Rains are heaviest between March and May and October to November, but you can still enjoy many activities in Nyungwe Forest at this time. Though it is more challenging during the wet season, wildlife trekking takes place all year round. Birdwatchers should book their trip between October and May for the best chance to spot the highest diversity of native species.
