Overwater villa? Look no further.

The iconic image of the Maldives is that aerial view of the different Islands. First you see the crystal-clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean, and then you’re pulled in by those villas on stilts, branching out into the sea. Staying in an overwater villa in the Maldives is a bucket list dream for many – and we can help you turn that holiday dream into reality.

First created in the Maldives in 1968, overwater villas are luxurious, standalone retreats perched on stilts above the gently lapping waters. Sometimes called overwater bungalows, they’re built slightly off shore and connected to the island by a wooden walkway – so you can enjoy total privacy, while having easy access to your resort’s facilities.

But why should you book an overwater villa? Other than the bragging rights it gives you, we guarantee that it’ll make your Maldives holiday extra special. Staying in an overwater villa is a real treat, and offers a completely private escape. Being above the sea means you’ll have direct access to the bath-warm Indian Ocean, where you can swim, snorkel or simply dip your toes. Your private terrace will have sun loungers, a daybed or a hammock, so you can watch the sunrise and sunset from your room. You can also look forward to a luxurious bathroom, complete with fluffy bathrobes and comfy slippers. And, of course, sweeping sea views come as standard in overwater villas in the Maldives.

But that’s not all. Each island resort is unique, with its own little extras and special touches for overwater villa guests. You might have private check-in, round-the-clock butler service, or your very own wine fridge. You can look forward to a semi-outdoor bathroom, or a bathtub with sea views. Some villas have an overwater hammock or glass-floored areas, so you can watch tropical fish swim beneath you. And, in some hotels, the overwater villas even come with their own private plunge pool or hot tub. Whatever you’re dreaming of, our experts will help you choose the perfect resort for your overwater villa holiday in the Maldives.

Resorts with overwater villas

You know you want to experience an overwater villa in the Maldives – but where would you like to stay? Jumeirah Vittaveli is one of our favourite resorts. This truly beautiful island has several different villas. You could have your own slide down into the sea, or a private pool. Or perhaps you’d prefer to have overwater hammocks and a wine fridge? Whatever you’re looking for, you won’t be disappointed.

Or take a look at LUX* South Ari Atoll. Here, the Romantic Pool Water Villas boast their own infinity pool, private access to the lagoon and a ‘love nest’ seat, where you sit back, relax and watch the best sunsets in the world.

At Conrad Rangali, meanwhile, the Sunset Water Villa is our top pick. Set in a secluded corner of the lagoon, this luxury retreat is only accessible by jet-boat or private walkway. You’ll also have your own 24-hour host, an infinity pool and glass-floor panelling. Alternatively, retreat to Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort & Spa, where you can meditate in your hammock, snorkel straight from your terrace, or sit back with Champagne in hand.

Overwater villas for couples

Enjoy date night, every night. Trust us when we say that – apart from going for a dip in the sea – you might not even want to leave your room. And, if that’s the case, it’s certainly no problem. Overwater villas come with everything you need for a comfortable, romantic stay.

In the morning, ask room service to deliver fruit and pastries to your door, and sit on your terrace with a fresh cup of java from your coffee machine. Then you can sunbathe, snorkel or curl up with a book. When afternoon sets in, open your mini-bar and enjoy a glass of ice-cold wine, beer or Champagne while you order a private dinner to your terrace. A lovely, relaxing day – and you haven’t moved a bit.

Overwater villas for families

If you’re travelling as a family, we understand that you want to keep everyone safe. So we only work with resorts that have put in special measures to protect your little ones, while they’re so close to the ocean. There aren’t many resorts in the Maldives that allow children to stay in their overwater villas – but we’ve got you covered.

Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa is fantastic for kids. They’ll have bunk beds in their own bedroom, a PlayStation, and access to a safe and secure terrace.

Last, but certainly not least, Meeru Island Resort & Spa is great for families. Nicely tucked away for complete seclusion, the Jacuzzi Water Villas are perfect for a getaway with the kids.

Split stay

Can’t decide between an overwater villa and a beach bungalow? When you opt for a split stay, you don’t need to choose.

Enjoy the best of both worlds if you’re visiting the Maldives for 10 days or more. You can spend your first few days or a week relaxing in your overwater villa. Chill out, get over the jet lag, and switch off from the busy world you’ve left behind. Then, for the remainder of your holiday, book to stay in a beach bungalow. You’ll have direct access to the powdery sands, and you’ll be nice and close to the resort’s activities, bars and restaurants.
