Discover the wonders of Broome and the North West. Encompassing mountains, canyons, waterfalls and, of course, plenty of spectacular, white-sand beaches, it’s any adventure-lover’s dream. Whether you want to kick back and relax on the coast, or venture though the wild Australian Outback, the North West’s got you covered.
Covering over 400,000 square kilometres of dramatic, cliff-laden landscape, the Kimberley makes up most of Western Australia’s North West. There’s no better place to channel your inner explorer. In Karijni National Park alone, you can hike along rugged trails, stand beside tumbling waterfalls and dive into secret, emerald pools. Over in Purnululu National Park, your intrepid adventure continues. Wander through maze-like gorges and marvel at the unique rock formations, before camping out beneath the star-studded sky.
If you fancy visiting the region’s incredible coastline, expect your time to be no less action-packed. Broome is a hotspot for all sorts of exciting excursions and daytrips. From whale-watching tours, to prehistoric boat trips and sunset cruises, most of the fun happens away from the shore. But, make no mistake, the beaches in the North West are pretty amazing, too. You’ll want to set aside a day or two to discover the endlessly-beautiful Cape Leveque. With sparkling sand, clay-coloured cliffs and brilliant, turquoise waters, the beaches here are truly majestic.
With helicopter rides, fishing trips, scuba diving expeditions and so much more to get stuck into, a holiday to Broome and the North West caters to just about any taste or interest. There’s an endless list of things to do across Broome and the North West. But, if you’re wanting to get a taste of the true Australian Outback, Karijni National Park is a great place to start. Known for its sloping rock formations and hidden pools, this canyon-adorned landscape is a wonder to explore.
Or, if you’d rather explore Western Australia on horseback, make tracks for Diggers Rest Station. This cattle station is nestled in the heart of the Kimberley, one of the largest wilderness areas in the world. Ride across the sprawling plains and bushland, accompanied by your trusty steed.
For fishing-enthusiasts, a fantastic spot along the North West’s coastline is Onslow. Take a short ferry ride over to the Mackerel Islands for a day of fishing, snorkelling and boating.
One of Western Australia’s most iconic natural attractions is the Bungle Bungle Range. Located in Purnululu National Park, theses striped sandstone formations cover over 400 square kilometres of land. You can take a guided walking tour to learn about their connection to Aboriginal culture, or you can take a helicopter ride for incredible aerial views.
Over on the coast, the small town of Karratha is good base if you’re wanting to visit the Dampier Archipelago. Ribboned around 42 pristine islands, the surrounding waters are home to coral reefs and sponge gardens galore. Have a go at snorkelling or scuba diving, before settling down to watch the sunset on the beach.
Another brilliant location is Cape Leveque. It’s worth a trip simply to admire the landscape, with its white-sand beaches and striking, red cliffs.
There are plenty of ways for you to get around Broome and the North West. At the top of our list, is a road trip along the Warlu Way. This 2,480-kilometre-long journey is one of region’s top attractions, starting on the coast and taking you all the way to Karijni National Park.
If you’d rather explore beyond the shore, a boat trip is just the ticket. For wildlife-lovers, whale-watching tours are a popular option. Set off from Broome to see humpback whales splashing through the ocean, as well as the occasional snubfin dolphin and sea turtle.
Or, if you’re looking to learn a new skill, why not join a mud crabbing tour? Cruise though Roebuck Bay and take in the enchanting mangrove scenery, before having a go at catching a Kimberley mud crab.
Wanting to see some of the North West’s incredible marine life? Then there are a few key months to keep in mind. You’ll be able to spot humpback whales between July and September, and your best bet of seeing snubfin dolphins is between March and December.
In terms of the weather, the region has both a wet and a dry season, with the dry season running from May until October. If you’re planning your holiday for this time of year, you can expect warm days and clear blue skies – ideal for exploring the great outdoors.
Overall, June and July are the most popular months. But, if you want fewer crowds and fantastic wildlife-watching, a September or October holiday is the way to go.
