Mauritius honeymoons made for you

Mark Twain famously said, “Heaven was copied after Mauritius” – and he certainly didn’t stay in the luxury hotels that are available now. This Indian Ocean isle may not have had five-star resorts in 1896, but it did have the same palm-fringed beaches, warm waters and romantic sunsets that you’ll find on your Mauritius honeymoon today.

Anchored off the east coast of Africa, Mauritius is known for its world-class diving, picture-perfect beaches and beautiful hotels. So it’s not surprising that this slice of paradise has become very popular with honeymooners. After the stresses of wedding planning, you can escape to Mauritius and spend some quality time together as newlyweds. Whether you want to relax on white sands, snorkel with tropical fish, or simply unwind in your luxurious resort, a honeymoon to Mauritius ticks all the boxes.

The beaches here are incredible, but Mauritius is much more than just a pretty face. If you’re a couple who likes to keep busy, a Mauritius honeymoon allows you to get involved with lots of activities, while still having the option to chill out. You can go hiking across the stunning hinterland, which is criss-crossed by trails. Black River Gorges National Park is the place to go for uninterrupted views of verdant hills, where the island’s last rainforest is filled with animals and birds. If you’re into wildlife, why not take a tour and track the Mauritius flying fox, the beautiful Mauritian kestrel or pink pigeon, one of the world’s rarest birds? Or, if you’re a pair of keen golfers, tee off on one of the island’s champion-standard golf courses.

After a busy day exploring, you can retreat to your beachfront hotel and relax. Head to the spa for a couples treatment, or enjoy a therapeutic massage on the beach as you listen to the sound of the waves. And, in the evenings, you can tuck into a delicious gourmet meal. You could even ask for a private dining experience on the sands, or have room service brought to your suite. With so much on offer, it’s easy to see why a honeymoon to Mauritius often top the lists of newlyweds – and now you can experience it all for yourself.

Mauritius honeymoon hotels

Mauritius is famous for its first-class hotels, so you’ll be spoiled for choice when you book your honeymoon. Whether you want an all-inclusive resort or an adults-only retreat, there’s something for every taste.

The Residence Mauritius is one of the best hotels on the island. Perched on the white sands of Belle Mare, overlooking the Indian Ocean, this colonial-style hotel is brimming with charm. Unwind in the spa pavilion, go for a dip in the sea-view pool, and relax in your beautiful suite.

If you’re looking for an adults-only escape, consider Paradise Cove Boutique Hotel. On the north coast, this petite base has an exclusive feel. Every room has a four-poster canopy bed, and you can hop between three pools, an oceanside spa and four restaurants.

Nearby, on the northwest coast, LUX* Grand Gaube is another romantic option. Many of the suites and villas are dotted along the curve of a secluded bay, so you’ll be staying in a private, exclusive spot.

Or, if you’re a couple of foodies, take a look at Heritage Awali Golf & Spa Resort. Here, you’ll access to 12 bars and restaurants across both Heritage Awali its sister hotel, Le Telfai.

Things to do on your honeymoon

You’re probably planning to spend most of your Mauritius honeymoon on the beach. With pristine white sands, swaying palm trees and turquoise waters, these sunny shores look exactly like a postcard. But when you do feel like stretching your legs, there’s plenty more to see and do beyond the beaches.

Mauritius is encircled almost entirely by a coral reef – the third-largest on the planet – which houses a vibrant underwater world. So if you’ve ever wanted to try diving, this is the place to do it. You can also go paddle-boarding or kayaking, and head out to sea on a dolphin-watching trip. Or a boat trip to Île aux Aigrettes will bring you face to face with giant turtles.

Alternatively, head inland to Black River Gorges National Park. There are lots of hiking trails here, taking you past tumbling waterfalls and colourful birds. You’ll also be able to see Seven Coloured Earths – a natural phenomenon in Chamarel where the soil has turned different shades, including deep purple, burning orange and rusty red.

Best time to visit Mauritius

You want your honeymoon to be perfect, and the weather plays a big part. Mauritius has a tropical climate, which means it’s warm all year round. But some months are better than others.

If you want balmy temperatures – without being too hot – it’s best to book your Mauritius honeymoon between April and June or September and December. At this time of year, humidity is lower and temperatures hover between 23°C and 28°C. So it’s warm enough to relax on the beach, but you’ll also be able to explore in the mornings when it’s milder.

January and February are best avoided, as these are the wettest months. It’s also worth remembering that, generally speaking, the northern and western parts of the island are warmer and drier than the eastern and southern regions. So keep that in mind when you’re looking at Mauritius hotels.
