Victoria Falls Holidays

VICTORIA FALLS? LET’S GO!

Combine a visit to the crashing falls with a city stay, cultural experiences, and adrenaline thrills when you choose holidays to Victoria Falls. Located on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls is a must-see when visiting Southern Africa. Fly into Livingstone (Zambia) or Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) from Johannesburg, Lusaka, or Nelspruit, or by rail on the luxurious Rovos Rail.

Whether you stay in Zambia or Zimbabwe, both offer easy access to both sides of the falls. While the Zimbabwe side offers the most iconic view of the falls and has water flowing most of the year, in Zambia you can get up close by swimming in Devil's Pool located close to the edge of the falls (low season only). Victoria Falls town in Zimbabwe is a classic 'tourist hotspot' with markets, hotels and restaurants, and, if a village feel is your style, this will be right up your street. If romantic riverside lodges appeal then head to Livingstone in Zambia and find yourself outside of the hustle and bustle in private hotels located along the Zambezi river.

Young explorers and active adults will find incredible opportunities for white water rafting, canoe safaris, jet-boating, quad biking, and more. Take it a little easier and enjoy fishing, horse riding, or a morning on the golf course. For finer moments, try a pampering spa or high tea at a luxury hotel. Markets for food, crafts, and curios provide ample opportunities for picking up souvenirs or browsing and taking in the atmosphere. Village tours immerse you in local life while a wealth of museums and galleries offer opportunities to uncover the culture and history of this fascinating region.

Easily combined with safaris in Zimbabwe, self-drives in South Africa and epic wildlife experiences in Botswana (or all three!) Victoria Falls offers a central highlight ideal for connecting one of more of these African destinations.

Planning a multi-country Africa trip can feel daunting which is where our experienced and knowledgeable sales consultants come in, helping you to create the perfect holiday.

Things to do

While Victoria Falls will be top of your agenda, that’s not all the region has to offer. Board a sunset cruise along the Zambezi River and sip gin cocktails as you glide by crocodiles and hippos. Grab a rod and spend slower hours fishing. Call into Maramba Market for traditional snacks, African fabrics, or artisan crafts.

Visit a curio market for wooden carvings, jewellery, paintings, and clothes. Discover local life with a village tour. Dedicate an afternoon to an indulgent high tea. Find a sweet treat at Da Canton ice cream. Enjoy a round of golf. Or dive into Zambian history at the Livingstone Museum or the Railway Museum.

Victoria Falls

While the falls’ namesake city on the Zimbabwe side is nearer to the cascades than Livingstone, you can get  closer to the water on the Zambian side. In the dry season, you can even get into it. Feel the spray on your face as you cross 120 metres over the gorge on Knife Edge Bridge. Peer up at the torrent from the river-level viewing spot of the Boiling Pot.

Best of all, cross to Livingstone Island and swim right up to the fall’s edge in Devil’s Pool, the ultimate infinity pool. For a slightly less nerve-wracking experience, Angel’s Pool is about 15 metres back but still allows you to sit in the flow of the Zambezi. Both Zambia and Zimbabwe offer helicopter tours but only Livingstone has microlight flights.

Perhaps inspired by the constant energy of the river, Livingstone and Victoria Falls today are filled with exciting activities and adrenaline thrills. Freefall in the mist of the plunging water with a bungee jump or swing from the historic Victoria Falls Bridge. Get onto the river and feel the speed of a daredevil jet-boat ride.

Paddle a canoe past hippos, elephants, and birdlife through the Upper Zambezi, or grip tight to a raft and take on ‘The Terminator’ and ‘Oblivion’ in the rapids below. Stay active while keeping dry with a quad bike tour to visit a local village, and enjoy incredible views as you go.

Best time to visit

The flow over Victoria Falls is at its peak between March and May, making for the most dramatic viewing during these months, especially from a helicopter or microlight flight. High waters can restrict swimming in Devil's Pool and access to some rapids when rafting, but plenty of adrenaline experiences are still available on the Zimbabwean side of the river.

July to November is the dry season in Livingstone meaning clearer skies and better conditions for most outdoor activities, while December to March brings rains and occasional storms. Temperatures reach their peak of up to 35°C between September and November and can drop to as low as 10°C in July and August. Time your visit with the full moon during the dry season for a chance to witness a spectacular lunar rainbow in the mist of the falls.
