Speak to our Travel Specialists today to plan your amazing getaway to one of the most unspoiled, off-the-beaten-track destinations in the world.
Hiking around the Earth’s second largest gorge (after the Grand Canyon) is the number one thing to do in Fish River Canyon. Don’t worry though, it’s not compulsory. Choose a lodge in the rugged park around the river and switch between activities and relaxation as you wish. Enjoy guided hikes for incredible views, go animal spotting at dawn or dusk, explore the wilderness on a 4x4 adventure, or choose the perfect place for sundowners in the desert.
Animal sightings are rarer than in most African locations but baboons, leopards, zebra, and antelope do occasionally emerge from the rocks while many birds, from eagles to ostriches, can also be spotted. Of course, you can always choose to do nothing except take in the landscape from your lodge pool, viewing deck, or restaurant.
From 1st May to 15th September each year, the period in which permits are granted, Fish River Canyon is a pilgrimage for hikers from around the world. Numbers are limited to 30 people per day, in groups of three or above, to preserve the safety, environment, and atmosphere. A range of trails offers something for everyone, regardless of experience.
The complete Fish River trail takes four to five days with camping under the stars while shorter and gentler routes can be enjoyed by novice walkers on day visits. Stay in a comfortable lodge at the start and end of your adventure to prepare and refresh. Whatever you do, don’t forget your camera!
If you’re hiking with a permit you can camp around the canyon but more deluxe accommodation is available across the region. Stay on the rim of the gorge at Fish River Lodge for easy access via drive, guided walk, or Fat Bike self-ride. Sooth away desert days in the natural pools of Ai-Ais Hotsprings Spa Campsite.
Rest in rustic luxury among the rocks at Canyon Lodge or Canyon Village by the Gondwana Nature Park. Sleep under canvas at Hobas Campsite. just a few miles from the river. or tucked away close to the park’s main driving route at Canyon Roadhouse. The short list of accommodation is testament to the unspoiled nature of Fish River Canyon and all part of the appeal for this lesser-visited location.
Hiking permits in Fish River Canyon are only available from 1st May to 15th September but conditions for sightseeing are perfect all year round. June to August are the cooler months, averaging around 23°C during the day and 10°C overnight. Pack layers if you plan to arrive during this period.
Temperatures reach their peak of around 35°C between December and February when it’s recommended to keep strenuous activities to mornings and save the afternoons for resting. If you’re planning a full Namibia tour including safaris in northern areas such as Etosha, June to November is an excellent time to visit.
