Overview

The Ghan Expedition is a truly unique adventure that travels south to Adelaide and boasts an assortment of wonders and allows intimate access to the spectacular landscape through the centre of Australia. Stepping aboard the Ghan Expedition you’ll realise that it’s not just the start of an incredible journey but the first chapter in a story. Starting in Darwin this four day all-inclusive experience takes in some of the most remote yet captivating parts of Australia in style and comfort. The Ghan also operates northbound from Adelaide to Darwin and there are various packages that can be booked.

Day 1

Darwin and Katherine

Your journey begins with a morning departure from Darwin. After settling into your private cabin mingle with your fellow travellers before lunch is served. Savour the regionally inspired menu that is accompanied by a selection of beverages before arriving at Katherine the Top End township early afternoon. There is a choose of activities available on disembarking the train, maybe opt for a cruise through the Nitmiluk Gorge an ancient natural wonder rich in Indigenous culture or experience a glimpse into the lives of those who call the outback home and spend time on a huge cattle station. Dinner will be served as the sunsets over the outback and then back in your cabin you’ll find your bed turned down.

Day 2

Alice Springs

Wake after your first night on The Ghan to be greeted by a view of the spectacular Red Centre. A full day of excursions in Alice Spring awaits and you can also choose to upgrade to a scenic flight to Uluru. This evening dine under the stars and enjoy a wonderful barbeque dinner at the historic Alice Springs Telegraph Station.

Day 3

Manguri and Coober Pedy

This morning’s stop is at the outback outpost of Manguri where you’ll venture into the weird and wonderful opal mining township of Cooper Pedy, where more than half the residents live underground. Enjoy a day of discovery and a gourmet lunch in a truly unique setting underground. Get back on the train for dinner maybe even enjoy a nightcap as the journey rolls smoothly onwards.

Day 4

Arrive Adelaide

You’ll see a very dramatic change in landscape when you wake on day four, the rich ochre tones of the outback make way for the green fields of South Australia. Travel through the Flinders Ranges and enjoy a leisurely brunch and prepare for your mid-morning arrival in Adelaide to complete one of the world’s great travel experiences.
