Fiji

Coral Coast & Momi Bay Holidays

Kick back on the Coral Coast

The Coral Coast is a popular choice for trips to Fiji’s biggest island, Viti Levu. Winding from Sigatoka to Suva, this stretch of coastline features picturesque beaches, secluded bays and marshy mangroves. And, just off shore, you’ll find dive sites teeming with colourful reefs and tropical marine life – the major draw of any Coral Coast holiday.

It’s inevitable that your Fiji trip will revolve around the ocean. You can discover underwater worlds, filled with corals and rainbow-coloured fish. Snorkel with gentle turtles and dive among wild sharks. And go paddle-boarding or kayaking across the calm waters of Momi Bay. But you’ll find plenty of things to do away from the beach, too. One of the Coral Coast's most popular activities is the Sigatoka River Safari which will see you board a jet boat for an adventure taking you deep into Fiji’s beautiful interior. Not only will you discover lush rainforest, you'll learn more about Fiji's warm culture and meet local communities.

Another great way to explore the Coral Coast is cycling along the old sugar cane railway lines. Hop on a modified electric bicycle mounted on the track and wind your way along the coastline through villages, mangroves and rainforests.

And, at the end of each action-packed day, you can retreat to your beachfront hotel and relax. Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay is our pick of the bunch. This five-star spot is one of the best hotels in Fiji, boasting luxurious rooms and fabulous restaurants. And its location is second to none – you’ll find it right on Momi Bay’s powdery sands, brushed by the azure waters of the South Pacific.

Whether you’re planning a family trip to the Coral Coast or a romantic getaway for two, our travel experts will tailor your holiday to you. So you can discover Fiji your way, without any stress.

Coral Coast diving

No holiday to the Coral Coast would be completed without taking a peek at Viti Levu’s underwater world. As its name suggests, the Coral Coast is dotted with reefs where you can snorkel with all kinds of marine life. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, why not go scuba diving? There are dozens of dive sites here and lots of day trips available, usually departing from Sigatoka. Whether you’re a seasoned diver or you’ve always wanted to learn, there’s bound to be an option that works for you.

On a Coral Coast dive, you’ll see a variety of tropical residents, including clownfish, angelfish and parrotfish, as well as larger species like grouper and snapper. And, of course, the blooming coral itself is a wonder to behold, with colour pops of pink, orange, turquoise and yellow.

If you’re an experienced diver, consider visiting Shark Reef Marine Reserve. Established in 2004, this protected area is a haven for wild sharks, with bull, tiger, lemon and reef varieties all regularly spotted. A swim with these ghostly creatures is sure to be a dive you’ll never forget.

Where to stay

Just 45 minutes from Nadi International Airport Momi Bay is a postcard-worthy scene on Viti Levu’s west coast. It’s a tranquil spot, ideal for snorkelling, kayaking and paddle-boarding. And, best of all, you can stay right on the shore. At the five-star Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay you can spend your days swimming in the pools and relaxing on the sheltered, sun-soaked beach. You can choose between a stylish suite and a luxurious ‘bure’ – a traditional Fijian hut. For the ultimate treat, we’d recommend staying in an overwater bure. Perched above the ocean, these romantic rooms offer a sea-view terrace and private steps down into the bath-warm water.

Venture a little further down the coast and you will reach Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort, one of the most well know properties on Viti Levu. This five-star resort is reminiscent of a traditional Fijian village. Expect thatched roof bures, lagoon style tropical swimming pools, swaying palm trees, a white sand beach and huge smiles from all the friendly staff. The resort boasts a luxury spa with outstanding ocean views, plentiful dining options including an award winning restaurant and an in-room Butler Service.

Exploring Viti Levu

Since you’ll be staying on Fiji’s largest island, why not go exploring? Discover Viti Levu's interior by jet boat on an adventure along the Sigatoka River; Meet the friendly, local communities who live on the river bank and learn about Fiji's history and culture. Explore the coastline and mangroves onboard modified electric bikes mounted on the old sugar cane railway line. Or make tracks for the beautiful Garden of the Sleeping Giant, where you’ll be able to see lily ponds, landscaped gardens and an abundance of tropical plants and flowers, including 2,000 types of orchid.

You could also enjoy a fun day out on Denarau Island. A 40-minute drive north of Momi Bay, this island – connected to Viti Levu by a causeway – is a hive of activity. You can splash about at Big Bula Water Park, or play a round of golf on the championship course.

If you want to see even more of Fiji, book an excursion to one of the nearby Mamanuca Islands. You can visit resorts such as Beachcomber or South Sea Island just for the day and make use of their facilities and non-motorised watersports. Or how about the world's first island beach club? Malamala Beach Club is just that. Unwind on a cabana bed, swim laps in the infinity pool and swim in the clear-as-could-be sea. Most operators offer complimentary pick up from Momi Bay and Coral Coast resorts.

Best time to go

It’s best to plan your Coral Coast holiday between May and October. This is Fiji’s dry season, so you can look forward to dry, sunny days with temperatures in the high twenties. Even night time temperatures rarely drop below 20°C, but you’ll be able to stay cool and comfortable in your air-conditioned hotel. As you’d expect, though, the dry season is the most popular time to visit Fiji. The beaches and hotels are particularly busy in July, so to experience the country’s great weather without the crowds, try to book your holiday for May, September and October.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for a budget-friendly break to the Coral Coast, you could consider travelling in Fiji’s wet season, which runs from November to April. Humidity is high and downpours are common, but the rain tends to come in short, heavy bursts. So you should still have plenty of sunny hours for snorkelling, sunbathing and exploring the island.
