Okonjima Nature Reserve Holidays

LEOPARD SPOTTING? SIMPLE.

Of Africa’s famous Big Five, one stands out as tougher to spot than the rest. Lions, rhinos, elephants, and buffalo are magnificent creatures which can be found all across the reserves of South and East Africa, but leopards are often elusive. Holidays in Okonjima Nature Reserve take you to one of the best spots for spotting these spotted cats anywhere in the world.

Thanks to the work of the AfriCat Foundation, Okonjima has become a sanctuary for leopards, cheetahs, brown hyenas, and pangolins. Along with many other creatures, these rarely-seen animals can be tracked across the reserve’s 20,000 hectares of acacia scrub to give every visitor the best chance of making a sighting.

Drive just two and a half hours north from Windhoek or hop on a brief flight to Okonjima’s private airstrip and stay in your choice of luxury lodge accommodation either inside or around the perimeter of the park. Easy access and comfortable accommodation make this family-run reserve ideal for bringing the kids with several options for wildlife viewing and cultural experiences even without the daily drives.

Okonjima trips are an ideal introduction to safari holidays and a great stop on any Namibia self-drive. Speak to our Travel Specialists to discuss how you can combine Windhoek and Okonjima with Etosha National Park and the Skeleton Coast.

Big Cat Conservation

Home to the pioneering AfriCat Foundation, dedicated to conserving Namibia's big cats, Okonjima Nature Reserve is one of the best places in Africa to spot leopards and cheetahs. Since 1991, AfriCat has sought to create a space where these magnificent animals can be protected but still live as they have for millennia in the wild.

As a result, many of Okonjima’s feline predators are electronically tagged, easier to track, and comfortable around humans. Your chance to see a leopard or cheetah in Okonjima, while never guaranteed, is much higher than in other parks. Discover how this ethical ecotourism project, championed by the BBC’s famous naturalist Chris Packham, is improving the quality of life and survival chances of Namibia’s most incredible big cats.
