The Big Island Hawaii holidays

Get inspiration

THE BIG ISLAND HAWAII? NO BIG DEAL.

With its diverse landscape, laidback atmosphere, and history-soaked landmarks, the Big Island Hawaii is one of the North Pacific’s most revered treasures. From mighty volcanoes that hiss and rumble, to the sweet chirping of the Hawaiian honeycreeper that you can hear from the tranquil rainforests, this island is overflowing with natural wonders. For a holiday that’s all about honouring Mother Earth, the Big Island Hawaii is the perfect choice.

One of five active volcanoes on the Big Island, Kīlauea is as thrilling as it is fascinating. Stare inside the bubbling lava pit that makes the sky glow brilliant hues of orange and red at night, or follow a hiking trail to see ancient petroglyphs and gnarly-looking lava tree molds. Or, perhaps you want to experience the eerie Kaumana Caves which were formed by the legendary Mauna Loa volcano. Located on the east side of the island, you can climb down into the 2,000-metre-long lava tube and explore the craggy walls and ceilings by torch.

During your Big Island Hawaii holiday, spending some time by the coast is a must. Renowned for its black sand beaches and sparking bays, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to picking out a sunbathing spot. If you fancy some snorkelling during your stay on the island, Kealakekua Bay is one of many great places to go. Whilst the rocky outcrops and slate-toned pebbled beach make for a stunning location, the magic really lies beneath the glittering water. Take a kayak or cruise away from the shore, where you can swim alongside tropical fish, turtles, manta rays and dolphins.

Whether you want to swim, surf and snorkel every hour of the day, or explore the island at a more leisure pace, we can help you create the perfect itinerary. For a Big Island Hawaii holiday without the fuss, get in touch with our Travel Specialists and find out more.

To spend some time in the great outdoors, pay a visit to Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve & Garden, where you can stroll past cascading waterfalls, koi ponds and thousands of tropical plant species. Follow that up with a scenic drive along the Kapoho Kalapana Road for unspoilt coastal views, before making your way to Mauna Kea Observatory to stargaze from the top of a dormant volcano.

Beaches

No two beaches in Hawaii look the same. The striking scenery of Punaluʻu Beach is perhaps the most unique on the island, with its black, volcanic sands and contrasting, emerald palm trees. The beach is also known for its thriving green sea turtle population. Stay on the shore to spot them basking in the sun, or head out on a scuba-diving expedition for a chance see them swim beneath the waves.

Of the world’s 13 climate zones, the Big Island of Hawaii has eight of them. From the polar tundra climate at the summit of Kauna Kea, to the dry arid climate of Kua Bay, the weather can quickly change depending on where you are on the island. But, whilst the ‘where’ matters, the ‘when’ isn’t really important. You’ll be able to experience warm temperatures and sunshine in any season, so long as you stick to the lower elevation areas.
