AUSTRALIA

Kakadu, Katherine & Arnhem Land

TOP END? TOP TRIP.

The Northern Territory’s “Top End” is sometimes overlooked. But Kakadu, Katherine and Arnhem Land holidays offer an Australian adventure like no other, with an incredible selection of landscapes and cultures. You can easily venture here from the Northern Territory's capital, Darwin, or incorporate this unique area into a wider tour of the Red Centre, Uluru and Alice Springs.

You can visit the 160-year-old pioneering town of Katherine to discover how one-and-a-half centuries of settlement has blended with thousands of years of Jawoyn Aboriginal history. Learn the tales of ancient times through Dreamtime stories and early rock paintings. And you can cruise or kayak through the famous Nitmiluk Gorge – previously Katherine Gorge – where 13 distinct canyons have been created by the powerful flow of the Katherine River.

Immerse yourself in Aboriginal culture when you explore Arnhem Land, the ancient home of the Yolngu people. You can uncover the past and present of one the largest indigenous groups in Australia, and the inventors of the didgeridoo. See how the soft sandstone of the Arnhem Land plateau cuts through lush green riverside terrain to create incredible waterfalls, and some of Australia’s best fishing spots.

You can also explore diverse habitats in the vast Kakadu National Park. In this lush area, rushing water plunges through rainforests, and crocodiles swim in river estuaries. You can marvel at 20,000-year-old rock carvings and hear the legends they reflect, then learn about local mythology and bush survival skills from your Aboriginal guide.

Kakadu, Katherine and Arnhem make the perfect trio for an escape into nature and history. If you’re looking to see a different side of Australia, there’s nowhere better to visit. Tempted? Speak to our Travel Specialists to find out more.

While the Top End experiences a range of weather systems, this area broadly falls into the dry and tropical summer seasons of the Northern Territory’s climate. April to October is the dry season, when temperatures are cooler and rainfall less common. This is the best season for hiking, swimming, and most outdoor activities, as attractions and areas are guaranteed to be open and accessible.
