Book your Naples holiday between December and March for warm, dry weather
Named after the sun-soaked Italian city, Naples sits on the southwest coast of Florida. Famous for its picture-perfect beaches, endless selection of golf courses and spectacular sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico, it’s a great choice for a laidback holiday. Busy bars and raucous crowds aren’t the kind of thing you’ll find in Naples. Instead, you’ll spend your Naples holiday dining in seafront restaurants, exploring downtown’s vibrant cafés, and watching the sky turn from blue to amber during a sunset stroll on the sands.
As well as beaches, there are more than 90 golf courses dotted across Naples and the surrounding towns. Even though a fair few are privately reserved for the residents of exclusive communities, many are open to holidaymakers looking for a coastal round or two. You’ll have a chance to play on a course that legend Jack Nicklaus designed, in the peace and privacy of the Florida countryside.
Naples is bursting with art galleries – more than 100 of them, and growing – and many are in the vibrant Downtown area. Wander through the streets and you’ll spot exclusive brands like Louis Vuitton alongside cosy boutiques and souvenir shops. Naples City Dock is another shopping and dining hub, where contemporary restaurants and old classics can be found side-by-side. If you love to while a day away with a rod and net in hand, grab a spot on Naples Pier, where local fishing fans and visiting anglers gather to see what they can catch.
Holidays to Naples are ideal for anyone who wants to enjoy life at a slower pace. There are plenty of attractions for little ones, as well as romantic coves for couples to explore, at this glittering Gulf of Mexico jewel.
Take a walk down Naples’ 100-year-old pier and admire the views from the end. It’s usually dotted with amateur anglers, as you don’t need a fishing licence here, so why not rent a rod and see what you can catch? Naples Zoo is popular with families. It’s home to lions, tigers, monkeys, alligators and more, and regular animal talks are held throughout the day. You can also take a stroll round the Caribbean Gardens, or set off on a river trip along Gordon River from here.
Shopaholics will love Fifth Avenue South, which stretches from downtown to Naples Beach. High street stores, beauty salons and eateries can be found in the shopping centre. Third Street South is also worth a visit for the restaurants, bars and art galleries on ‘Gallery Row’. You should also make time to visit its farmers’ market, open every Saturday morning, or to learn more about the history at Naples Historical Society.
Seeking a place where you can hone your game? Old Corkscrew Golf Club, which lies just north of the city, was designed by Jack Nicklaus and it’s a tricky course cutting through the wild Florida countryside. TPC Treviso Bay is similarly challenging, thanks to the endless lakes dotted across the manicured course. The three-kilometre drive to the clubhouse is stunning, as it’s set among Mediterranean-style houses, fountains and bridges.
Windstar on Naples Bay overlooks the waterways of Port Royal and Naples Beach in the distance, so you’ll get the best views of land and sea during your round. In the centre of the city, Naples Grande Golf Club is one of the most popular courses, so make sure you reserve your tee-times before arriving. If you can bag a spot, it’s an idyllic course dotted with cypress trees and pines.
Central Naples Beach is the city’s most popular stretch of sand, just steps from Downtown’s shops and restaurants. Stroll along the pier or spend time stretched out in the sun. Lowdermilk Park will suit family days out, as there’s a large green park, volleyball courts and golden beach – all perfect for games and picnics.
Barefoot Beach County Preserve in North Naples has made it onto countless ‘Best Beaches in America’ lists. You can expect to find brilliant white sands, while large boardwalks cross from the dunes to the beach and back into Naples.
Seeking a private escape? Gordon’s Pass, in the exclusive Port Royal area, can only be reached on foot, but the 30-minute walk is worth it for a few hours on its secluded sands. You can also take a boat out to Keewaydin Island, a nature reserve just off the coast of Naples, where there are even more beaches to explore.
Holidays to Naples in Florida are most popular between late November and early March – this is also the busiest time in the city. You’ll enjoy temperatures in the late teens to mid-twenties and dry, sunny days. If you’re not keen on crowds, late March to May is a quieter time to visit. Temperatures rise to mid-to-high twenties, and the rainy summer season is still yet to arrive.
Summer – from June to late August – is hot, but it’s still a popular time for Floridians to get away to the coast. If you’re not keen on humidity, you might find this time of year quite uncomfortable. But, if you can brave the heat, there’s still plenty going on in Naples at this time of year. September to November is still warm, and drier than summer – but it’s also hurricane season, so the city is fairly quiet.
