Packing tips

China is a country that has a little bit to offer everyone. Whether you’re visiting to marvel at the modern cities, or you’re more interested in the historical sites and the most famous wall in the world – your vacation to this amazing nation will be one you’ll never forget.

When packing it’s best to take a bit of everything in order to suit every activity. There’s no doubt you’ll spend a lot of time sightseeing, so comfy shoes are really crucial – as is a camera (of course!).

For evenings in the city, be sure to pack some smart clothes – so you can make sure you take advantage of the world-class dining options.

If you venture out of the city, you’ll want comfy clothes that can adjust to different temperatures and climates (China has very varied weather depending on where you are).

Weather in China

As China is such a large country with such a huge landmass, it’s impossible to generalise with the climate and weather – because one side of the country experiences completely different weather to another.

During winter, many areas of China can fall well below zero – meaning you’ll want to wrap up warm and take plenty of layers. However, come summer – you’ll find that most of the country stays above a pleasant 20º C.

When trying to figure out the coldest and warmest parts of the country, the list below may be of assistance.

  • Cold-Temperate Zone: Northern part of Heilongjiang Province
  • Mid-Temperate Zone: Jilin, northern Xinjiang, and most of Heilongjiang
  • Warm-Temperate Zone: Yellow River, Shandong, Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Hebei Province
  • Subtropical Zone: South of isotherm of Qinling Mountain-Huaihe River, east of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau
  • Tropical Zone: Hainan province, southern Taiwan, Guangdong
