After a day in Miami, you’ll travel down to the picture-perfect Florida Keys, driving across the incredible Overseas Highway to Key West and Key Largo. Then it’s on to the Everglades National Park – where you can search for alligators – and the stylish town of Naples, which boasts fantastic dining, shopping and beaches.

Drive on to Sarasota and Crystal River, where you’ll be able to see gentle manatees in the wild. And, of course, no Florida self-drive tour would be complete without a visit to Orlando. You’ll have three days in the ‘Theme Park Capital of the World’ so you can ride the rollercoasters to your heart’s content.

The best time for your USA self-drive tour very much depends on where you want to go. Each state’s climate is slightly different but, in general, spring and autumn are fresh and pleasant. Spring is a fantastic time to visit California or Florida, as you’ll be able to explore the cities and make the most of the beaches, before the intense summer heat arrives. The East Coast is lovely at this time of year, too – but autumn is also a great time to go, as you can see New England’s fiery foliage.

Depending on your route, winter can be a tricky time for a road trip in the USA. Some mountainous national parks – like Yellowstone and Yosemite – may be closed if there’s heavy snow. At the other end of the spectrum, summer is often very hot and humid. So this might not be the best time to explore southern states, like Florida and Tennessee.
