This 22-day itinerary from New York to San Francisco is the ultimate USA road trip, from big cities to even bigger national parks.
Start your three-week adventure in New York City before heading north to Niagara Falls, stopping off at Philadelphia and Washington DC on the way. Next, make your way through the Great Lakes to the Windy City, Chicago, before continuing through Yellowstone, Salt Lake City and Bryce Canyon. From here, you'll head into Arizona and drive along the Historic Route 66 towards Las Vegas. After a night in Sin City, make your way through the Mojave Desert towards California. You can tick off Los Angeles, Malibu, Santa Barbara and Monterey, before finishing your journey in San Francisco

Travel westward through the grasslands of South Dakota to Badlands National Park. Once home to buffalo and antelope, this wild landscape is filled with colourful rock formations. Continue on to the Black Hills, which are sacred to the Plains Indians. It's also the site of Mount Rushmore, the monument to four great American presidents: Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Roosevelt.

Travel through Grand Teton National Park and see awesome mountain peaks soaring up to 4,000 metres. Visit the Snake River Outlook and gaze out over the stunning landscape made famous by Ansel Adam's iconic shot. Later, you'll arrive in the Mormon State of Utah, where you can take a short tour of its capital, Salt Lake City. The followers of Brigham Young built one of the USA's best-planned cities. You can see the State Capital building and visit famed Temple Square and the Tabernacle, before arriving at your hotel for the evening. We'd suggest booking dinner at the Rooftop Restaurant, to enjoy a bite to eat with panoramic views of Temple Square.

Continue to spectacular Bryce Canyon, where a tour through a multi-coloured world of sandstone spires and pinnacles – called "hoodoos" – are sure to amaze you. In the evening, weather permitting, you can admire the most spectacular night sky, filled with sparkling stars and constellations.

This morning, you'll drive to stunning Lake Powell – the second-largest man-made lake in the USA – where crystal blue water laps against towering red-rock canyon walls. Then you'll visit the colossal Grand Canyon National Park, one of the seven great natural wonders of the world. Stop at the canyon rim to fully appreciate this mile-deep canyon's gorges, rising spires, extinct volcanoes and, right at the bottom, the winding Colorado River. You'll spend the night in Flagstaff, a famous stop on Historic Route 66.

This morning, it's time to hit Las Vegas, the dazzling "Entertainment Capital of the World". Along the way, you'll pass through Seligman, a town built along the Route 66 which looks like it's frozen in time, 60 years ago. The remainder of the day is yours to discover the dazzling hotels, shows and casinos along in Sin City.

Make your way to Los Angeles across the Mojave desert, where clusters of unique Joshua trees dot the mountainous landscape. Drive through the "City of Angels", passing through world-famous neighbourhoods such as Hollywood, the Sunset Strip and Beverly Hills, before reaching your hotel.

To make the most of your day in LA, we'd suggest taking an optional full-day tour around Universal Studios Hollywood. You can get an inside look at the sets and learn behind-the-scenes secrets of legendary films. And, if you're feeling adventurous, you can embark on one of the Studios' feature rides, including Jurassic Park and Revenge of the Mummy.

Leave Los Angeles in the morning and travel north through one of California's favourite holiday spots, Santa Barbara, where palm-lined walkways border white-sand beaches. The city is famous for its mission and Spanish heritage. Along the way, you can stop at an iconic California lifeguard tower made famous in "Baywatch". Continue up the Californian coast towards Shell/Pismo Beach.

Dip your toes into the cool, refreshing waters of the Pacific during an early morning beach stroll, then hop in the car and drive north to Carmel – a charming town, which is also famously the home of Clint Eastwood. You can browse the shops and galleries of this famous artists' colony, before travelling further north to visit Monterey's Old Fisherman's Wharf. Stroll along the pier to Cannery Row, brought to fame by John Steinbeck's novel. In the afternoon, you'll drive past the fertile valleys of Castroville and Santa Clara, en route to the pretty city of San Francisco.
