8 unmissable things to do across the Great American West

Get more inspiration

The Great American West and the great outdoors go hand in hand.

Encompassing North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Idaho and Wyoming, this wildly-beautiful USA region can only be described as a work of art – courtesy of Mother Nature, of course. Offering an endless list of things to do, with surprises waiting round every turn, this is the ultimate adventure holiday destination. Take a look at our top experiences you simply can’t miss across the Great American West.

Let Yellowstone leave you awestruck

One of the most-visited attractions in the USA, trip to Yellowstone National Park is a must if you’re planning a Great American West holiday. If we’re talking geography, you’ll find Yellowstone over in Wyoming, although, it does spill over slightly into Montana and Idaho. Across this juggernaut of a park, you’re totally spoilt for geological wonders and other-worldly sights to see. Drop by the Old Faithful geyser to watch one of the regular eruptions, witness the sheer force of Yellowstone Falls, or see the vivid, rainbow colouring of the Grand Prismatic Spring – the third largest hot spring in the world.

Connect to your inner cowboy

Whether you fancy picking out one state to explore during your time in the Great American West, or you’ve got your sights set on multiple destinations, you’re bound to get a feel for Western Culture during your stay. But, if you want to fully immerse yourself in the lifestyle, look no further than a ranch holiday. Try your hand at horse-back riding, as you trek through sprawling prairielands and past tumbling mountains with your trusty steed – making sure to sneak in some wildlife-watching, rafting and fishing along the way.

Glamp beside glacier-carved mountains

If you want to dive into all things Mother Nature during your Great American West holiday, there’s no better place to start than with Glacier National Park – one of the many beauty spots located in Montana. A landscape chock-full of rugged mountains, mirror-like lakes, densely-packed forests, and glaciers, it’s any adventure-lover’s dream. If you want to take your trip to the next level, we’d recommend a night or two of glamping here. Huddle round the campfire after a day of hiking and biking, gazing up at the canopy of stars before heading to your luxury tent.

Weave your way through bison herds

If the incredible natural scenery of Glacier National Park has left you wanting more, the next stop on your itinerary should be Custer State Park in South Dakota. With over 70,000 acres of Black Hill landscape to explore, you’re bound to be kept busy during your visit. Fill your time paddle-boarding across lakes and climbing up steel-toned mountain peaks. Or, for some jaw-dropping views, take a drive along the Going-to-the-Sun Road. However you choose to explore, be sure to keep an eye out for some wildlife, particularly the bison, who aren’t shy about blocking the road!

Hit the slopes on a winter holiday

On the hunt for a totally unique winter holiday? Look no further than the state of Idaho. Nearly half of this peak-laden state is covered by the mighty-sized Rocky Mountains. And, while its grandeur remains just as impressive throughout the year, it’s perhaps at its most fun when there’s a bit of snowfall. Take your pick from a range of fantastic resorts and get stuck into skiing, snowboarding, fat-biking, snow-kiting and more. Over at the Sun Valley, you can even try heliskiing, with epic runs scaling up to 3,000 feet.

Dive into Native American culture

In North Dakota, many distinct tribes make up the 30,000-strong Native American population. So, as you might expect, there’s a trove of history and tradition to uncover during your holiday here. Of course, American Indian heritage and culture is a big part of all the states that make up the Great American West, but North Dakota is our chosen first stop. Hear stories and browse exhibits at the North Dakota Heritage Centre and State Museum. Or, drop by one of the sacred sites, such as Standing Rock – the birthplace of tribe leader Sitting Bull.

Go on a presidential adventure

An iconic landmark known the world over, Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a destination that features on a fair few bucket lists. You’ll find this masterpiece hidden away in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Although, once you arrive, getting a good sighting won’t be a problem, with the sculpted faces of Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln looming roughly 60 feet above the ground. Stopping for a photoshoot is a must. But, afterwards, you can take to one of the easy-to-navigate walking trails, or embark on a thrilling hot-air balloon or helicopter tour, soaking up 360-degree views from dizzying heights.

Experience a quintessential Western rodeo

Want a taste of the Old West during your USA holiday? As the name suggests, the Great American West is the place to experience exactly that. For the ultimate, fun day out, make your way to a rodeo. One of the most famous events - Cheyenne Frontier Days – takes place in Wyoming, usually during the last week of July. Watch bare-back and bull riding, and cheer from the stalls during a wild horse race. And, in the evening, make sure you don’t miss the rock and country music concerts – featuring some of the biggest names in the industry.
