These pretty isles are the ideal place to go cycling or kayaking, and you’ll have fantastic views of Toronto’s skyline.

After an action-packed few days in the city, pick up your hire car and drive south along the shores of Lake Ontario – you’ll reach Niagara Falls in less than 90 minutes. This thunderous waterfall straddles the Canada-US border, and sees 3,160 tons of water cascade down every single second. If you want to get closer, hop on the Hornblower Cruise and sail into the mist. There’s plenty going on in the city of Niagara itself, too. Go up the Skylon Tower or ride the Niagara Skywheel. And, in the evening, you can take your pick from theatrical shows, independent breweries and buzzing casinos.

If you’re eager to discover the dramatic West Coast, this Canada multi-centre is the one for you. You’ll kick off your trip in Vancouver – a diverse hub of beaches, parks, lakes, mountains and a vibrant cityscape. Hire bikes and cycle around Stanley Park, browse the Museum of Anthropology (MOA) and see the famous Gastown Steam Clock. You can expect a world-class dining scene, too, from the cafés of Granville Island, to the bars and restaurants of Yaletown.

Next, you’ll board the ferry to Vancouver Island, where you can explore Victoria. The historic capital of British Columbia is home to impressive landmarks like the Parliament Buildings and Craigdarroch Castle, as well as Butchart Gardens. We’d also recommend taking a whale-watching trip, as you’re likely to see wild orcas and seals.

Your final stop will be idyllic Whistler. Just 70 miles north of Vancouver, this alpine town is all about the great outdoors. You can expect to find snow-capped peaks, pine forests and glacial lakes, which serve up endless activities. In summer, you can go hiking, zip-lining, bear-watching and mountain biking, while the winter snows offer fantastic skiing and snowboarding.

From Calgary, you can make the 90-minute drive west to Banff National Park. One of Canada’s most stunning landscapes – and the country’s first national park – this place boasts postcard-worthy spots like turquoise Moraine Lake and wolf-shaped Peyto Lake.

After a few days in the park, journey northwest towards Jasper National Park, which is famous for its abundant wildlife. You can search for deer, elk, moose, cougars, and black and grizzly bears. You’ll also be able to see Alberta’s tallest peak, Mount Columbia, and the sprawling Columbia Icefields. Once you’ve had your fill of nature, make your way westwards, where glittering Vancouver awaits.

The predominantly French-speaking province of Quebec is home to the fascinating cities of Montreal and Quebec City. The two are just 160 miles apart – and Canada’s capital, Ottawa, is another 120 miles west of Montreal. Start your getaway in historical Quebec City. It’s the only walled city north of Mexico, and Old Quebec is even a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this part of town, you’ll be able to explore charming streets, fantastic restaurants and Château Frontenac – an imposing castle-like hotel, which is well worth a visit.

Then you can continue on to Montreal. Built on an island, this picturesque city boasts Canada’s biggest church and a bloom-filled Botanical Gardens. Make sure you also spend some time in the Plateau area, hopping between the cosy cafés and galleries.

Your final stop is Ottawa. On the border between Ontario and Quebec, Canada’s capital is where you’ll find the Canadian Government buildings at Parliament Hill. Go for a walk along Rideau Canal and check out the National Gallery of Canada. And, in summer, Ottawa’s calendar is jam-packed with festivals.
