Overview

Pairing two incredible Canadian cities with an iconic rail journey through the Rocky Mountains, this epic holiday will be hard to forget. You’ll start off on Canada’s west coast, with three days exploring Vancouver – you can go for a lazy stroll in Stanley Park or enjoy a night out in the Gastown neighbourhood. Next, it’s time to board the incredible Rocky Mountaineer train. You can sit back, relax and gaze at the breathtaking scenery – and you might even spot a bear or two along the way. You’ll disembark in Jasper and drive to Banff National Park, where you can admire stunning lakes, dramatic mountains and quaint towns. Your Canadian adventure comes to an end in Calgary.

Day 1:

Arrive in Vancouver

On arrival in Vancouver, you’ll make your way to the hotel – the Downtown area is just a 25-minute transfer from the airport. You can spend the rest of your first day getting to know your way around. Why not walk along the harbour and maybe venture into Stanley Park?

Day 2-3:

Vancouver

You’ll have two full days to explore Vancouver – and there’s plenty to see. We’d recommend spending a morning on Granville Island, as this foodie paradise has more than 70 eateries and Canada’s first microbrewery. In the afternoon, you could head north to hop on the Skyride to ride 1,600 metres up Grouse Mountain – the mountain views are spectacular.

On day three, take it easy and head out to one of the city’s popular beaches. Or you could stroll around one of Vancouver’s many gardens, or explore Chinatown – it’s the third-biggest in North America. And no visit to Vancouver would be complete without getting out on the water. Go on a boat trip in search of orcas and dolphins (May to September) or enjoy a dinner cruise around the harbour.

Day 4:

Rocky Mountaineer, Vancouver to Kamloops

You’ll have an early start today, but it’s worth it. Make your way to Vancouver Station and board the Rocky Mountaineer for your railway trip to Jasper. You’ll be welcomed on board with a refreshing drink and, as you enjoy breakfast, you’ll notice the scenery start to change. The train will follow the scenic Fraser River Valley eastbound, so you’ll soon leave the city behind and be surrounded by stunning wilderness.

As lunch time rolls round, enjoy a three-course lunch and listen to stories about the region you’re travelling through. Once you reach Kamloops, you’ll disembark and be transferred to your hotel.

Day 5:

Rocky Mountaineer, Kamloops to Jasper

Back onboard the train, you’ll continue east as you tuck into breakfast. Look out for Pyramid Falls, which can only be seen by rail. And, as the train ascends, you’ll be surrounded by dramatic mountains. You’ll know when you’re close to Jasper – the train’s final destination – as you’ll be able to spot Mount Robson, the tallest peak in the Canadian Rockies. Once in Jasper, you’ll disembark and collect your hire car, so you can carry on exploring the Rocky Mountains and its national parks.

Day 6:

Jasper

Today is yours to explore Jasper National Park – but you’ll have different experiences, depending on when you go. In summer, can spend your day hiking across a number of trails, hire bikes, white-water rafting, or enjoying spectacular views on the Jasper SkyTram. You’ll also be able to spot all sorts of wildlife. Why not go on a guided walk to search for elk, mountain goats, coyotes and moose?

As you can imagine, winter is very different. Snow covers everything, making it the perfect time for skiing and snowboarding. But there are plenty of other activities, too. Enjoy a dog-sledding tour, go on a canyon ice-walk, or watch the Northern Lights and glittering stars from the planetarium.

Day 7:

Jasper to Lake Louise

Today, you’ll hit the road in your hire car and travel to Banff National Park. The journey takes around three-and-a-half hours, but there are plenty of places to stop and take in the views. Just over an hour from Jasper, you’ll come across the Columbia Icefields Discovery Centre, where you can grab a bite to eat and – if you’re brave – walk on the glass-bottomed Skywalk.

Not long after, you’ll reach the Weeping Wall. This will be covered in sheets of ice in winter, while spring sees trickles of water falling from almost 1,000 feet high. Carrying on along the Icefields Parkway, Bow Lake is another great place to stop. It’s one of the largest lakes in Banff National Park so it’s a great spot for a short stroll or picnic. From Bow Lake, Lake Louise is only a 30-minute drive. On arrival, you can check into your hotel and spend the rest of the afternoon however you wish.

Overnight – Fairmont Lake Louise / Deer Lodge

Day 8:

Lake Louise to Banff

It’s just a short drive from Lake Louise to Banff, so you’ll have plenty of time to explore. Why not drive to one of the Gondola experiences? The Banff Sightseeing Gondola is an eight-minute ride in an enclosed cabin which takes you up Sulphur Mountain, where you’ll find a café, restaurant and hiking trails. Or there’s the Banff Norquay Sightseeing Gondola – an open-air ride to the summit of Mount Norquay, where the viewing platforms boast wonderful views of Bow Valley.

Back at ground level, you can stroll around the charming town of Banff. With lots of shops and boutiques, it’s the perfect place to pick up gifts and souvenirs. Plus there are plenty of bars and restaurants for you to enjoy your penultimate night in Canada.

Overnight – Rimrock Resort

Day 10:

Depart Calgary

It’s the last day of your Canadian adventure, so you’ll make your way to the airport for your flight. If you’re flying in the evening, why not make the most of your time with a trip to the picturesque Prince Island Park? Surrounded by the Bow River, it’s a lovely spot for one last holiday walk or picnic.
