Collect your campervan this morning and kick off your adventure with an easy two-hour drive to Niagara Falls. We’d suggest stopping at Niagara-on-the-Lake on the way, as this quaint town has charming cafés and cute boutiques, and you might even see a horse-drawn cart or two. Riverside Park Campground makes a great base for exploring Niagara, as it’s right on the Niagara River, just a few minutes’ from the Falls. Take a boat trip to the base of the thundering waters, get a bird’s-eye view from a helicopter, or stand on one of the observation decks tucked behind the waterfall. Niagara is also a famous wine region, so why not visit a vineyard while you’re there?
Driving distance – 80 miles
Get back on the road and drive towards the resort town of Blue Mountain, just past the western tip of Lake Simcoe. We’d suggest staying in the Wasaga Beach area – this is the longest freshwater beach in the world, so it’s well worth a visit. And the clear waters of Georgian Bay are synonymous with water activities, so make sure you’ve packed your swimmers. Wasaga Beach is also close to the Blue Mountain Resort village, where you’ll find a ski resort and a selection of restaurants and shops.
Driving distance – 160 miles
Day six sees you travel through what’s known as Ontario’s playground, Muskoka. You’ll come across sparkling lakes, dramatic landscapes and sleepy towns. Your final destination is Algonquin Provincial Park – a quintessentially Canadian spot which is great for wildlife-watching. The park offers several hiking trails for all abilities, as well as a few canoe routes. While you’re here, you could also opt to sail onboard RMS Segwun, the oldest operating steamship in the world.
Driving distance – 110 miles
Travel further east today to the vibrant city of Ottawa, Canada’s federal capital. If you’re after an adrenaline adventure, then why not enjoy some white-water rafting on the way, near Forest Falls? There’s a range of campsites around Ottawa, but we’d recommend Popular Grove Campsite which is just 30 minutes’ outside the city. It’s best to stay for a couple of nights, as you really need a full day to explore Ottawa properly. Stroll along the Rideau Canal, explore the many museums, galleries and historic sites, or wander around ByWard Market in Downtown Ottawa – one of North America’s largest and oldest farmers markets.
Driving distance – 200 miles
After a couple of days in Ottawa, drive along the Rideau Heritage Route to discover charming towns and historic lochs, before arriving at the Thousand Islands. You can explore these lovely isles on a cruise, sailing past tree-clad coves, palatial waterfront homes and rustic island cottages. The historic city of Kingston is also worth a visit, and we’d definitely recommend stopping at Fort Henry. Here, you can immerse yourself in a marvellous reproduction of 19th-century military life in Canada.
Driving distance- 175 miles
Today, your motorhome adventure comes to an end as your drive 190 miles back to Toronto, weaving along the shores of Lake Ontario. It’s time to return your vehicle – but why not spend at least one more night in Toronto? You could check into a Downtown hotel, and then explore some of Toronto’s multicultural neighbourhoods, such as the six Chinatowns, Portugal Village, Greek Town, Little India and Little Italy.
