7 nights accommodation, Niagara Falls day trip and flights

Overview

Experience a well-known city, a majestic natural wonder, and the lesser-known city of Yellowknife in Canada’s Northwest Territories, all in one holiday. Start your trip in Ontario in the bustling city of Toronto, spend some time seeing the sights, sample fresh produce, see the city from above at the CN Tower and maybe even catch a sports game. Then enjoy a day trip down to Niagara Falls, where you will sample ice wine, spend some free time in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and of course get up and close to the falls on the Hornblower cruise.

After some time in Ontario board an Air Canada flight to the Northwest Territories and experience the wilderness that is Yellowknife. With a population of around 20,000 this is a relatively small city, but it packs a punch with the activities and scenery on offer. Wander through the Old Town, stop for a bite to eat at the city’s oldest restaurant; Wildcat, rent a canoe and get out on the water at Great Slave Lake or hike the Ingraham Trail and discover Cameron Falls. One of the main attractions just outside of the city is the chance to view the Aurora Borealis, so make sure you add on a Northern Lights viewing excursion and if you are lucky you will get to witness one of the world’s most spectacular natural spectacles.

Day 1: Tuesday

Explore Yellowknife

After arriving in Yellowknife late last night today you will get to see Yellowknife in the light. Join a city tour and get to know the area with a guide who can tell you about the history and best places to go. For lunch we recommend heading to Wildcat Café, housed in a log cain, this is the city's oldest restaurant.

After refuelling head to the Bush Pilot’s Monument, from here you will get magnificent views of Great Slave Lake and the cities northern foothills. The monument is dedicated to the bush pilots who lost their lives flying into the wilderness and to reach the vantage point you need to head up the spiral staircase. Spend the rest of the afternoon exploring Yellowknife’s Old Town, with its quirky cottages, stately mansions, and colourful houseboats, you will also see many seaplanes coming in and out.

Great Slave Lake is a wonderful place to spend some time in the summer, rent a canoe or a paddleboard and spend some time on the water. You can paddle around Latham and Joliffe Islands and marvel at the cabins, mansions, and houseboats. Make sure you take a packed lunch with you as there are not many options for food once here. When you get back to Yellowknife stop for dinner at The Woodyard and enjoy delicious food and a cold beer on the beautiful patio.

Tonight, we suggest booking an aurora viewing package. Departing from Yellowknife late evening, you will be transferred to a location 30 minutes from the city where you will have hot drinks and First Nation snacks waiting for you. If you're lucky you will then be able to witness the wonder that is the Aurora Borealis, marvel as the green and purple hues dance in front of your eyes, you can brave the cold and head outside to witness the lights or you can enjoy it through the windows from the comfort of the warm tent.
