Combine city sights, sunny beaches and age-old history on this private six-day Jordan tour. With the coastal city of Aqaba as your base, you can discover the natural wonders of the Red Sea by snorkelling or diving. See colourful corals, swim with tropical fish and keep your eyes peeled for wild turtles. Aqaba has plenty of historical sites, too, including an ancient fort and a fascinating museum.
You’ll also be able to visit two of Jordan’s most famous attractions. Marvel at the blush-coloured city of Petra, and enjoy a 4x4 drive across Wadi Rum’s striking desert landscape.
Once you land in Amman Airport, you’ll be met by your tour coordinator. Then you’ll set off with your English-speaking driver along the desert highway to your hotel in Aqaba, where you’ll be staying for the next five nights.
Today is yours to spend however you wish, as you settle into Aqaba – Jordan’s only coastal city. You can stroll around to get your bearings or, after a busy day of travelling, simply take things easy on the beach. Brushed by the Red Sea, Aqaba is a hub for snorkelling, diving and watersports – and it’s warm and sunny all year round. Hire a snorkel and flippers and explore pristine reefs, where you’ll see wild turtles and seahorses. Or you could go on a diving trip – there are centres dotted across the city, where you can book lessons and guided trips.
On your second leisurely day in Aqaba, why not explore some of the city’s cultural sites? You can visit the sand-coloured Aqaba Castle – sometimes known as Aqaba Fort – which was built by Crusaders in the 12th century. Admire the beautiful Sharif Hussein bin Ali Mosque, and learn more about the city’s history at Aqaba Archaeological Museum. Nature-lovers should make tracks for Aqaba Bird Observatory, too.
Today is sure to be the most memorable day of your Jordan trip. After breakfast, you’ll travel to the Lost City of Petra. Thought to have been built in the 5th century BC, this UNESCO-protected site is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World – and it’s not hard to see why. Carved into the rose-hued rocks, Petra’s temples, tombs and monasteries are an incredible sight.
Next, you’ll set off on a two-hour Jeep tour of Wadi Rum. Made famous by its appearance in Lawrence of Arabia, this lunar-like desert features dramatic cliffs and orange dunes. You’ll drive across the sands, explore deep canyons and see 4,000-year-old rock paintings, before returning to your Aqaba hotel.
Whether you want to relax in the sunshine or go on an adventure, make the most of your last full day in Jordan. You could go on a glass-bottomed boat tour, hire kayaks, or try your hand at wakeboarding. Or you could simply chill out on the powdery beach, and enjoy one final dip in the Red Sea.
After a leisurely breakfast, your driver will take you to Amman Airport.
