The vast tea plantations are a genuine wonder, too. You can go on a three-day tour through the Cameron Highlands, which takes you through the waves of cultivated emerald landscape.

See yourself as an expert hiker? Climb up to the heady heights of Mount Kinabalu, which you’ll find in Malaysian Borneo. It’s one of the highest mountains in Southeast Asia and, on a clear day, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better sunrise. If you don’t mind a challenge, this is truly a soul-cleansing experience for hiking pros.

While predominantly a Muslim country, Malaysia’s rich multiculturalism is evident in its many stunning religious landmarks. Religions have coexisted in harmony for centuries here, so you can expect to see bronze Buddhist temples, ornate mosques and colourful churches all found throughout the country. Many of them make for some top-tier sightseeing, in both urban and natural spaces.

The temples of the Batu Caves – guarded by an immense statue of the Hindu deity, Lord Murugan – are some of Malaysia’s national treasures. Bursting with colour, the mystical limestone caves are accessed via the dramatic 272-step stairway, and well-worth the effort. They’re easily accessible, too, as they’re less than an hour’s drive from central Kuala Lumpur.

The Ottoman-influenced architecture of the Masjid Wilayah is another must-visit. You can see the sky bouncing off its crisp and reflective polished marble floors.
