Day 1: Arrive in Kuching
Land at Kuching Airport and meet your representative for the transfer to your hotel.
Day 2: Bako National Park
You'll spend day two of your Borneo tour discovering the country's natural beauty. In the morning, you'll set off for your full-day tour in Bako National Park. Bako is home to seven rainforest ecosystems, so it has a remarkable diversity of both animals and plants. Keep your eyes peeled for flying squirrels, monitor lizards and macaques, as well as the area’s most famous residents – the proboscis monkey. You can also expect to see unique geological features, rugged coastlines and secluded beaches.
Day 3: Kuching – Mengkak Longhouse
After breakfast at your hotel, it's time to head to Batang Ai. Enjoy a scenic drive through lush countryside and a stop for lunch at Lachau Town, before arriving at Batang Ai Hydro Lake. Here, you'll have a tranquil 30-minute sailing to Engkari River, towards your accommodation for the night – a 37-door Mengkak Longhouse. Perched on a hill beside the river, this is the perfect place to unwind. After dinner, you can join the residents for a glass or two of tuak – rice wine – and a short cultural performance. The Iban are fun-loving people, so you'll be expected to get involved with the evening festivities.
Day 4: Mengkak Longhouse - Batang Ai
After a hearty breakfast, you can watch a blowpipe demonstration, before having a go yourself. Then you'll learn about the traditional uses of Borneo rainforest plants in Iban culture. After lunch, you'll hop into a longboat and sail to Aiman Batang Ai Resort & Retreat.
Day 5: Batang Ai – Kuching
Today is mainly a travel day, as you journey on to the next stage of your Borneo tour. After breakfast, you'll depart for Kuching via the same scenic route as your arrival. Stop for lunch at a small roadside town, before continuing on to Kuching.
Day 6: Kuching - Kota Kinabalu
After breakfast, you can enjoy some leisure time before your flight to bustling Kota Kinabalu. Affectionately known as KK, the capital of Borneo is home to colourful markets, sleek malls and a picturesque boardwalk. In the evening, you'll be able to see it all for yourself with a tour of the city. Once you've explored all your options, you can tuck into a dinner of your choice – take your pick from fresh seafood, Malaysian specialities, exotic fruits and more.
Day 7: Kota Kinabalu Park & Poring Hot Springs
After an early breakfast, you'll be picked up and driven to Kinabalu Park. This beautiful park is home to 4,500 species of plants, 289 kinds of bird and 290 types of butterfly. So it's well worth the two-hour drive through the mountainous Crocker Range, where you can gaze at the passing paddy fields and authentic villages. When you arrive at Kinabalu Park, you'll be able to enjoy a walk along the nature trails of the Botanical Garden. On a clear day, you might even be able to see towering Mount Kinabalu – one of the highest peaks in Southeast Asia. After lunch, you'll make a stop at Poring Hot Springs. If you're feeling brave, you can also walk across the Canopy Walkway. Suspended above the jungle, these bridges give you a wonderful view of the tropical rainforest.
Day 8: Kota Kinabalu - Sandakan – Sepilok - Sukau
After an early breakfast, you'll transfer to Kota Kinabalu Airport for your flight to Sandakan. Once you land, you'll head straight to the wonderful Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, which works to reintroduce captive orangutans into the wild. You can watch these gentle creatures at feeding time, and see man's closest relative roaming in their forest-like sanctuary. You'll also be able to visit the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. Afterwards, you'll take a boat trip to a riverside restaurant for lunch, before sailing through mangrove forests in search of proboscis monkeys, birds and reptiles. Once you've checked in to your hotel, you can join a river cruise along to the Menanggul River.
Day 9: Oxbow Lake – Kinabatangan River – Sukau
After waking to the Borneo soundtrack of gibbons and hornbills, you'll take a river trip to Oxbow Lake to observe wildlife and experience the early morning river ambience of Sabah's longest river. Once you've returned to the lodge and had something to eat, it's time to visit Gomantong Cave – this spot is famous for its edible bird nests. You can explore the cave system by following the boardwalk, which leads you to Simud Hitam Cavern. In the afternoon, you can relax however you wish, before taking one final river cruise in search of more wildlife.
Day 10: Sukau – Sandakan
After an early breakfast, you'll return to Sandakan by boat. Once you arrive at Sandakan Jetty, you can enjoy one last lunch in Borneo, before transferring to either Sandakan Airport or your chosen hotel.
