Enjoy all sorts of adventures in Namibia’s vast desert, including sandboarding and dune-climbing
Plan your Namibia trip between June and October, as the dry season is the best time to see wildlife
Namibia holidays take you to the driest and oldest desert in the world, the deepest canyons in Africa, and one of the best game reserves in the continent’s south. Diverse and untamed, this place really does put the ‘wild’ in wilderness. Whether you’re drawn to its picture-perfect landscapes or the variety of animals, Namibia makes for an action-packed and mesmerising getaway.
Namibia’s expanse of uninhabited desert – which encompasses both the Namib and the Kalahari – is home to some of the oldest sand dunes in the world. Rust-coloured sands provide a stark contrast against the clear blue skies, while dramatic canyons give way to granite rock formations and hidden coves. It’s a daredevil’s playground where you can try dune-climbing, hiking, sandboarding and skydiving. A scenic flight is the best way to take it all in, as a bird’s-eye view allows you to admire every inch of the sprawling desert.
But, for many travellers, the country’s wildlife is the main draw of a holiday to Namibia. Revered for its conservation efforts, the famous Etosha National Park boasts an abundance of animals – you can search for them on either a self-drive trip or guided safari. Whichever you choose, you’ll have the chance to see cheetah, zebra, ostrich and flamingos, plus four of the the ‘Big Five’ – lion, leopard, rhino and elephant. You could visit a game reserve in the Caprivi, where you’ll see hyenas, crocodiles, leopards, and some of the 430 bird species. Or, in Damaraland, you can track desert black rhinos through the Kalahari on a guided daytrip.
You can continue your wildlife search by going dolphin-watching, or try your hand at kitesurfing and windsurfing off the coastal town of Swakopmund. Alternatively, spend a few days discovering the cultural highlights of Namibia’s capital, Windhoek. You can visit the historical church of Christuskirche, stroll around the lush Parliament Gardens, and admire exhibitions in the National Art Gallery of Namibia. Plus, Windhoek’s many markets are the perfect place to pick up a souvenir of your Namibia holiday.
