Explore the beautiful Douro River Valley on a river cruise aboard the S.S. São Gabriel. The ship is designed to embody the Douro River Valley, bringing the region to life through its décor and delicious food and wine. You’ll sail up the Douro from Portugal through to Spain, giving you the chance to see beautiful landscapes, learn about the region’s fascinating history, sample incredible wine and food, and discover a host of cultural treasures.
All meals onboard the ship are included and you’ll enjoy six days of excursions, including guided “Do as the Locals Do” options. Get a crash course in the history of Port, enjoy a tasting session at a prestigious Port wine estate, explore historic towns with a local expert, and more.
Arrive in beautiful Porto, the city at the mouth of the Douro River. You’ll be greeted at the airport and transferred to the ship, where you can unpack, relax and spend the rest of the day at your leisure.
Spend today exploring Porto, Portugal’s second largest city after Lisbon. Learn about the city’s largest export, Port, discover UNESCO-listed buildings, colourful townhouses and Medieval alleyways. Depending on how energetic you’re feeling, you can choose from a leisurely city tour or an extensive walking tour.
In the evening, enjoy a special Captain’s Welcome Reception and Dinner and reflect on the day’s activities with your fellow travellers.
Today is all about wine. Get a crash course in the history of Port which has been cultivated in the Douro Valley since Roman times. Visit the Douro Museum to learn more, sample some wines, and enjoy lunch at a local quinta with a breath-taking view.
There are a few options for you today. Head ashore for some tasting at a prestigious Port wine estate, or enjoy a vineyard hike and a visit to a local quinta. In the afternoon, don your walking shoes for a close look at some prehistoric carvings at an archaeological park in the Coa Valley.
Today, you’ll sail into Spain and visit the historic university town of Salamanca, known locally as ‘The Golden City’. Famous for its sand-coloured buildings, numerous churches and fantastic food hall, this is a great spot to stop and explore. Continue your way up the Douro Valley and watch UNESCO-protected landscapes drift past you.
Ride through scenic countryside and discover the village and ruins of Castelo Rodrigo. From atop the hilltop, you’ll have outstanding views. The village is a charming place to explore, as you can taste local delicacies including honey, almonds, cheese and olive oil.
Stop in Guimarães, the town where Portugal was born and the home of the nation’s first King, Alfonso I. The immaculately preserved Old Town boasts UNESCO World Heritage status – which is hardly surprising when you consider its unique architecture, charming plazas and fascinating history. Round off your river cruise with a special Captain’s Farewell Reception and Dinner.
Disembark from the ship and transfer back to the airport for your flight home.
