Deep South

South Carolina Holidays

SOUTH CAROLINA? SORTED.

Sandwiched between North Carolina and Georgia, South Carolina is the epitome of the USA’s Deep South. It might be the smallest state in the region, but this place certainly packs a punch. You can expect to find historical cities, soaring mountains, fantastic cuisine and – naturally – warm Southern hospitality. And, as an added bonus, South Carolina has a 200-mile coastline with some knockout beaches. So if you’re looking for a combination of cultural sites and sun-soaked sands, a holiday to South Carolina should be on your list.

Postcard-worthy Charleston is ideal for history-lovers, with its pastel-coloured buildings and significant landmarks. Here, you’ll find the USA’s first ever theatre, and one of the oldest markets in the country. You can take a guided tour of the city, or hop between its boutiques and cafés. If you fancy a history lesson during your South Carolina holiday, make sure you visit Charleston’s Old Slave Mart Museum, or take a daytrip to one of the nearby ex-plantation houses.

Elsewhere, Myrtle Beach is best for families and water babies. Right by the Atlantic Ocean, this resort town has an impressive 60-mile swathe of beaches, perfect for swimming, surfing and sunbathing. And keen golfers will be in their element. Myrtle Beach in South Carolina has dozens of award-winning golf courses, including some of the best in the whole of the US. Or you could venture further south to Hilton Head Island. Near the Georgia border, this scenic isle is home to 12 miles of sandy beaches and 23 Championship golf courses.

Of course, wherever you go for your South Carolina holiday, you can look forward to mouthwatering cuisine. Make sure you try the classic dish of shrimp and grits, feast on crispy fried chicken, and tuck into juicy barbecued pork. And don’t miss the chance to have a bowl of Frogmore stew – a hearty speciality made with sausage, shrimp, corn on the cob and potatoes. Started drooling? Charleston

The largest city in South Carolina, Charleston is a must-visit during your holiday. The charming streets are crammed with grand houses, ornate churches, and independent shops and cafés. And the city has plenty of history to boot, as Charleston Harbour was a major entry point for the trans-Atlantic slave trade during the 1800s.

Pretty Charleston offers lots of things to do during your South Carolina trip. Take a guided city tour in a horse-drawn carriage to get your bearings, and find out more about the city’s past along the way. You can browse 300 stalls of local produce at Charleston City Market – one of the oldest in the USA – and hunt for treasure in King Street’s antique shops. Or why not catch a show at the country’s first theatre on Dock Street?

If you’re keen to learn more about South Carolina’s history, make sure you visit one of the ex-plantation houses near Charleston. A day tour will give great insight into the lives of both the plantation workers and owners. Magnolia Plantation is a popular choice, but Boone Hall Plantation is the most beautiful, as it comes complete with an oak-lined driveway and grand pillars.
