Prepare to eat and eat well on your Charleston holiday. Savour southern style hospitality in great restaurants where new age chefs have found everything they need – a revitalised Lowcountry cuisine, unique and alternative dining spaces and a local appreciation for the locally grown and sourced. Charleston is best explored on foot – adjust your holiday package to include the many architectural charms and resorts offering Atlantic views such as Hilton Head Island. The Confederate, American Military and Old Slave Mart museums and plantations are informative additions to the general ‘Gone With The Wind’ ambiance.
Interlaced with biking and walking trails and studded with golf courses. It’s also a popular destination for water based activities like kayaking, parasailing and paddle boarding. Don’t let the word ‘resort’ put you off, it’s not all lawns fronting establishments boasting words like ‘luxurious’ and ‘world class’. Real estate Developer Charles Fraser had it designed to blend with nature and there’s a couple of nature preserves in the north and south. Add activities like dolphin watching to your package itinerary and watch these clever mammals strand fish along the coast. The dolphins work together to flush fish onto the beach and then haul themselves through the shallows to pick them off.
Even if Civil War site seeing doesn’t feature on your Charleston holiday to do list, it’s hard not to be reminded of a simpler time. Stately houses, antiquated buildings and hanging-lanterns on street corners are the tip of the iceberg. There’s a long list of house museums with resplendent features like self supporting spiral staircases (Nathaniel Russell House), antique collections, fine furnishings and manicured gardens (Middleton Place). Don’t miss St John’s Lutheran and St Philip’s churches either or the Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim synagogue – the longest operating in the country. There’s also a Saturday farmers market in Marion Square (9am-3pm).
Charleston is the sort of town where you stop and smell the roses. Spoon a breakfast of fisherman’s shrimp and grits before heading out for coffee on a cafe’s veranda. Lunch in ultra hipster establishments in Upper King and at dinner try to figure out how to use an oyster fork as you steal glances of the Ashley River. It’s a place to savour the small things, wafts of jasmine on a midsummer’s eve and distant rumbles of thunder to prick your eyes at. Handsome horses clip-clop through town and newlyweds pose outside itsy churches and inside secret gardens. Charleston is as charming as they come.
Charleston has a humid subtropical climate. Winters (late December – late March) are mild, summers hot, humid and mosquito ridden. Visit in the spring when the slight chill of winter has departed and before hurricanes come knocking. Fall is a similarly pleasant time to be here but delay until later on when there are fewer storms. This coincides nicely with the slump in accommodation prices and kids going back to school. Budget conscious travellers should visit in winter as prices are low apart from Christmas and New Year time. It rains year round so carry a lightweight waterproof or umbrella.
