Visit the River Walk and explore UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Alamo
Located in southern Texas, San Antonio is the state’s oldest major city. It takes just over an hour to drive down from the state capital, Austin, and you’re likely to be greeted by the sound of mariachi bands once you arrive. While more than 1.5 million people call this charming city home, it still has plenty of small-town appeal. A holiday to San Antonio serves up bustling shops, exciting restaurants, and a fascinating heritage.
San Antonio is a melting pot of American and Mexican culture. Spanish is widely spoken, bustling side streets sell authentic Mexican crafts, and Tejano music is played everywhere. San Antonio’s five Spanish colonial missions were designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2015. In the heart of Downtown, you’ll find its most notable, the Alamo, which symbolises Texan independence. The four outer missions are protected as a National Historic Park and together they form North America’s largest concentration of Spanish colonial architecture – a must-see on your San Antonio holiday.
Visitors are often drawn to this diverse, colourful city for its European-style River Walk, where there are endless al fresco dining options, ideal for a romantic meal. An extensive mix of cafes, restaurants and shops sit on the banks of the scenic San Antonio River, which you can also explore by foot or cruise. If you want delicious eateries and top tourist attractions on your doorstep, it’s best to stay in the River Walk area. Or, if your ideal San Antonio trip involves browsing modern art galleries by day and visiting lively bars by night, opt for a base in the vibrant Southtown.

The summer season is when San Antonio is at its busiest and hottest. Packed with tourists, the city’s top attractions have lengthier queues and it can be difficult to get seated at restaurants. It’s common for temperatures to reach 37°C during this time, but May, June and October are also the wettest months – so you’ll need to pack an umbrella. San Antonio’s family-orientated attractions, like Six Flags Fiesta Texas, extend their opening hours during the summer, but most are open year-round too.
If you want to avoid crowds and have daily highs in the early-twenties, plan your San Antonio holiday between November and April. At this time of year, temperatures are more comfortable for exploring the 300-year-old Alamo and early San Antonio architecture at Casa Navarro State Historic Site. You’ll also be able to experience some of the city’s best festivals. The Alamo Bowl, Fiesta San Antonio, and San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo are three key events that take place annually.
