Right on the waterfront, The Fortress’ rooms and suites line the powdery sands of Koggala Beach. It’s just over two hours from Colombo Airport, while a leisurely 30-minute drive along the coast will take you to sunny Galle. Some rooms here have direct access to the resort’s abundant tropical flora, while others are a gentle barefoot walk to the shore. One of the resort’s main attractions is the free-form infinity pool where you can cool off after a busy day, or sip cocktails on a sun lounger and enjoy the view.
You’ll have no trouble keeping busy during your stay at The Fortress, thanks to the variety of tours available. Take a boat safari to Koggala Lake to see how cinnamon is manufactured, or explore Sinharaja Forest Reserve where you’ll spot an array of native plants, animals and birds. Reception can also organise a whale-watching trip from the nearby village of Mirissa – sail out onto the sea and get a glimpse of blue whales, pygmy whales and bottlenose dolphins.
As well as lounging on the beach under blue skies, you can indulge in a wealth of relaxing activities at The Fortress. Visit the sea turtle hatchery and even get involved with safely releasing baby turtles, helping them make their way to sea. Meanwhile, Ayurveda Spa offers a range of therapies designed to help you unwind, including purifying treatments, sea salt body scrubs and aromatherapy massages.
You can dine indoors or outdoors at White, where there’s authentic Sri Lankan cuisine suffused with traditional spices, alongside wood-fired pizzas and tandoori dishes.
For a meal awash with romance, head to Duo. This place serves up a candlelit dinner in the resort’s wine cellar, so you can match your tipple with your food.
An al fresco restaurant, Salty Snapper specialises in delicious, freshly caught seafood. Admire the sea view and finish up with homemade ice-cream – expect unusual flavours like spicy pol sambal.
World-famous Sri Lankan tea is the inspiration for the refreshments on offer here, including high tea, afternoon snacks and tea-inspired cocktails.
When you’d like a little bit of solitude, you can order from any of the resort’s restaurants and have it delivered to your room.
With exposed brick highlights and grand white pillars, The Fortress exudes luxury from the lobby to the top floor. Rooms have curved furnishings, dark accents and generous windows leading to a private balcony or terrace. The native flora that surrounds the resort gives each room a subtle sense of privacy, too.
