For years Abu Dhabi was considered to be nothing more than a bureaucratic settlement, housing the United Arab Emirates government and little else of note. It firmly lived in Dubai’s shadow. This all changed in 2004, when due to a tragic death of Sultan Zayed, his son, Sultan Khalifa, took over. Sultan Khalifa quickly went to work on trying to emulate the success of Dubai, allowing foreigners to purchase land for the first time and relaxing the strict local Muslim laws for foreigners.
It should be noted that even though Abu Dhabi has taken a leaf out of Dubai’s book when it comes to accepting Western influences, it has stuck to it’s guns a bit more firmly than it’s more liberal neighbour did. This means that you can only drink in the restaurants in the hotels. Although Dubai claims to use the same rules it should be noted that they are more lenient than Abu Dhabi. Couples should note that public displays of affection are seriously frowned upon and can even lead to prison time in extreme cases. Unfortunately, homosexuality is outlawed in Abu Dhabi and is considered a fairly serious crime. The locals are not prone to prying however, and will not ask about anyone’s sexuality, so it is easy enough to keep a low profile.
Local customs aside, should you choose to visit Abu Dhabi you will be in for a real treat. Many people prefer Abu Dhabi to Dubai as it has a similar feel yet doesn’t have the “over the top” factor that can put some people off Dubai. You can still find all the usual shopping, restaurants, national parks, local cultural landmarks and souks that you would expect from an Emirate yet there is much more of a traditional Muslim feel to the city.
