Why Jordan Should Be Your Next Holiday Destination

by Travelbag on 20 June 2017, 12:06PM

There are plenty of destinations to choose from when considering a visit to the Middle East, but Jordan sure sets the bar high for its neighbours. Its location next to the Dead Sea makes it perfect for a rejuvenating couple’s escape, whilst its rapidly expanding adventure tourism promises fun for the whole family. We have selected five of our favourite Jordan experiences to help you make the most of your trip.

1. Petra

Petra

Without a doubt, Petra is the shining jewel in Jordan’s crown. Nestled deep in the rugged mountains, visitors enter the ‘Lost City’ through a narrow gorge flanked on either side by colourful 80 metre high cliffs which eventually give way to reveal your first sight of the Treasury. This massive dusty pink facade dwarfs everything around it and makes for an unforgettable first glimpse into Jordan’s magical past.

Petra extends for 60km2 through canyons, up mountains and along river beds so we recommend four days to really explore everything here. Motorised vehicles are not permitted on the site so those seeking alternative transport can opt for a horse-drawn carriage or a camel/donkey ride.

2. Dead Sea

Dead Sea

Despite its biblical history and hugely historic landmarks, holidays to Jordan are famed for their revitalising opportunities offered by the Dead Sea. It is a natural phenomenon due to its high salt content, rendering it uninhabitable to any fish seaweed or plants. The end result is a serenely quiet landscape lapped by a cocktail of salty water that supplies the medicine and agriculture industry with some of its finest products. For visitors, this offers the chance to grab a book, soak up the sun and bob along the water without the fear of sinking!

3. Amman

Amman

Jordan’s modern city of Amman is built on the sands of time, affording its visitors spectacular views of the desert and nearby Jordan Valley. Although there are reminders of the city’s heritage all around, the centre of Amman is full of contemporary buildings, plush restaurants and hotels. This modern feel, coupled with the city’s temperate climate, has made it one of the most popular regions in Jordan for residents and tourists alike. We recommend an early morning visit to the magnificently restored Roman Theatre to capture beautiful photos in the sunrise.

4. Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum

Harsh yet beautiful, uncompromising but breathtaking, the shifting sands of Wadi Rum are a spectacular addition to any Jordan holiday. Whether you want to hike up the surrounding mountains or simply enjoy the boundless empty spaces lying within, there is no denying the natural beauty of this region. Activities in Wadi Rum range from 4x4 drives to camel tours and camping trips under the stars. The Royal Aerosports Club of Jordan offer a great range of aerosports here which gives a great alternative view of the sands and natural dunes.

5. Aqaba

Aqaba

Apart from being a great base to discover Southern Jordan, Aqaba is a tourist attraction all unto itself. Spend a few days here and discover a microcosm of fascinating history, excellent hotels and leisure activities including shopping, sailing and of course beach-hopping.  Perhaps Aqaba’s greatest draw is the Red Sea where you can experience some of the best snorkelling and diving opportunities in the world. View the plethora of marine life up-close on a dive, or board a glass-bottomed boat if you prefer to keep your feet dry!
