5 Reasons You Must See South Australia

by Travelbag on 01 November 2016, 16:11PM

2016 has seen South Australia named in Lonely Planet’s top 5 areas of the world to visit in 2017. In celebration of its 5th place feat, we’re sharing with you the top 5 reasons we think you should go!

1. Picture Perfect Scenery

Flinders Range, South Australia

Views, tranquillity, feeling one with nature; all these amazing elements can be found in abundance in South Australia. Find yourself surrounded by a natural amphitheatre in Flinders Range; discover why the ‘Remarkable Rocks’ are so aptly named and gaze upon the uninterrupted night sky of the Outback; seeing more stars than you thought existed.

2. Array of Activities

Adelaide

Adelaide was thoughtfully constructed, this simple grid layout is commonly known as “Light’s Vision” and it’s Colonel Light you can thank for how easy it is to navigate the city. This means you can spend your day on a bike tour of Adelaide seeing all the sights.  Where else can you get up close with a koala, tour one of the most picturesque crickets grounds in the world, and then take a stunning twilight boat cruise all in one day?

3. Diverse Wildlife

Kangaroo Island, South Australia

South Australia full to the brim of wildlife encounters; a lot of this can be experienced on the pristine Kangaroo Island. Firstly, there’s the namesake – kangaroos, and they are running rife on this island along with their marsupial buddies the wallaby and koala. Next, there’s the largest population of purebred linguarian bees, specially noted for their delicious honey. Finally, there’s the marine life; full of unique experiences. Kangaroo Island is one of few places in the world where you can see both the Australian sea lion and New Zealand fur seal in one place. Furthermore, there’s the exotic leafy dragon, whales, dolphins, and even penguins – what more do you want.

4. Wine

Barossa Valley

While listing you a barrel full of reasons to visit South Australia, it’s only right we include our favourite barrel craft – Wine! South Australia is famous for its amazing wine regions and known as Australia’s wine capital. In fact, wine is such a commodity you’ll find over 200 cellar doors within an hour’s drive of Adelaide – best to bring your favourite designated driver with you. We’re sure you know to find the world famous Barossa Valley wines of Wolf Bass and Jacobs Creek here, but how about tasting a wine from the year you were born at Seppeltsfield Wines? Here they have a cellar full of wines, dating as far back as 100 years ago.

5. Adelaide Festivals

Adelaide is renowned as the city of festivals, “boring Sunday” isn’t something to be heard in the capital. Festivals run year round with bigger weeklong celebrations taking place throughout the calendar, usually in and around the festival centre, Elder Park. The real draw though is the Adelaide Fringe Festival, the second largest of its kind and the largest in the southern hemisphere. The celebration runs for a month from February and into March, featuring 900 events and more than 4000 artists from around the world, it also premiers world exclusives of films, TV shows and music.
