How to get the best holiday bargains

by Anna Watt on 22 January 2016, 14:01PM

With no let up on the dark mornings and evenings, many Brits are planning their 2016 getaways, with long haul destinations top on the list for those looking for warm climates, exotic vistas and exciting adventures.

Long-haul travel specialists Travelbag has come up with a list of hints and tips on how to search out the best bargains for your all-important holiday, meaning the further you travel needn’t necessarily mean the more you’ll pay.

Intro1

The list has been compiled by Travelbag’s experienced sales consultants, who offer a personal service and are experienced in getting the best value for money for their clients.

Kirsten Hart from the Knutsford branch suggested that you consider indirect flights. “These are mostly cheaper than the direct routes, plus most regional airlines allow stopovers in their hub cities without incurring a surcharge.

“I’d really recommend a stopover, not only can it make the flight costs cheaper but can make your trip more interesting in that you see more than one country.”

Be flexible on dates was the top tip from Scott Smith from Solihull, “I know it is an obvious one but if you can, avoid school holidays, including half terms. Your travel agent will be able to advise you as to what dates these are so that you can plan around them.

“If you are limited to holidaying during popular travel periods, being able to fly midweek means you avoid the Friday and Saturday supplements that airlines charge and can often result in availability being greater and therefore flights coming in cheaper.”

Nicola Poole from Travelbag’s Cheltenham branch added, “Get advice from your travel agent as to specific dates to avoid. These vary from destination and can include national holidays, where holidaying locally may be hugely popular for nationals, meaning hotels have less availability and prices go up.

“Local events such as big sporting events and festivals can also result in a spike in hotel costs, however don’t worry, these usually only last a few days.”

Jenny Griffin from Brighton went on to suggest that customers buy their flight and accommodation package together rather than separately, which many think can be cheaper.

“Airlines have exclusive offers on flights when booked alongside accommodation. These are only available to tour operators that contract directly with the airline, and not to customers that are booking direct.”

“I’d also suggest that if you are considering visiting two or more destinations, seeing if there is a hotel brand that has properties in each as some hotels have multi-property offers.”

Finally, customers are urged to sign up for Travelbag’s weekly newsletter which gives information on special offers and flash sales, meaning you have more of a chance of taking advantage of these savings before they run out.

Travelbag customers are allocated a dedicated sales consultant upon first contact. This consultant is then ‘with you all the way’ as in the company’s tag line, and is contactable either by phone and email, plus if they are based in one of Travelbag’s seven stores, clients can meet face to face to discuss and plan their holiday.

Travelbag stores are located in central London, Brighton, Solihull, Cheltenham, Winchester, Alton and Knutsford.
