How the Olympics have inspired our holiday plans

Rio de Janeiro

Inspired by the tremendous atmosphere and events of the Olympics in Brazil? Do you want to witness the sublime sights you've seen on the T.V. or just want to get involved in some sport yourself? We can help make that happen, so you can see all the action for yourself and totally pretend you’re Adam Peaty when swimming in your hotel pool!

Here at Travelbag, the Olympics have reignited our love of Brazil, inspired us to visit more world sporting events and get more active on holiday. Here’s our guide to how:

Inspired by Brazil?

Iguassu falls, Brazil

It’s fair to say that the list of attractions and places worth visiting in Brazil is longer than Mo Farah can run…and that’s far! Nevertheless, we do have a few we highly recommend you experience.

Christ the Redeemer statue is forever on our screens, but now it’s time to witness the largest art deco statue in the world for real. We most certainly believe it’s worth the long walk to see the irreplaceable views from the very top. Make sure to wear comfy shoes and plenty of sun cream and you’ll be good to go! Or, take it easy, ride the narrow-gauge train to the top in just 20 minutes!

If you like visiting sights that are unique and almost surreal, then take a few days out of the city and head west because Iguassu Falls is somewhere you need to go. Trust us, your jaw will drop when you see the hundreds of waterfalls up close.

A couple hundred miles north of Rio is the city of Ouro Preto. Strolling down all the little quirky crooked cobblestones streets is the perfect way to spend your day or late afternoon. This historical city is full of exceptional Mineiro art and architecture. You can find this city at the bottom of the Serra do Espinhaço (that’s the Espinhaço Mountains in Portuguese).

Where to stay:

Rio de Janeiro

Eyed up a lot of places whilst watching the Olympics, which you'd love to stay in? Fly over there and you can then stay in 4* or 5* luxury in Rio de Janeiro, where most of the Olympic action happened!

The Royal Rio Palace Hotel, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (4*) is a hotel to certainly take a look at, with a great location in central Copacabana and is a short walk from the famous beach, shops, bars and restaurants, it's location is faultless.

If you like the sound of visiting the Iguazu Falls, then The Viale Cataratas Hotel, Iguassu Falls, will be right up your street, as it's only 22 km from the waterfalls! Furthermore, it’s located right in the centre of Foz do Iguazu city, so you've got plenty of options of where to wine and dine and indulge in local cuisine.

What to look forward to:

Dubai golf

Really wish you went to the Olympics? You're not the only one, trust us! But why not start booking to experience another famous sporting event you've always dreamt of seeing in person? Here are a few events coming up soon, which may take your fancy.

If your heart is still set on Brazil, then luck is on your side, as the Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix is coming up this November (11th-13th November). You may not see Usain Bolt but you may get a glimpse of Lewis Hamilton or even Max Verstappen!

Another sporting event that is taking place this November (17th-20th November) is the Golf World Tour Championship in Dubai. Watching world-class players and catching a tan, what more could you want?

Want to be the action rather than looking at it all? Well, we’ve got plenty of suggestions; head to New South Wales, Australia, for a host of thrilling activities like watersports, quad biking, and more. Or, really push yourself participate in the ‘Patagonia International Marathon’, Chile. If you’re looking for something more sedate, take on the great walks of New Zealand.
