Why go on holiday to Sri Lanka

by Travelbag on 20 November 2015, 12:11PM

If you’ve never been to Sri Lanka for a holiday before, then you’re missing out. It’s one of the most beautiful parts of the world.

In this guide we hope to encourage you to make Sri Lanka the destination for your next holiday.

Reason 1 – There’s something for everyone

Sri Lanka has tropical beaches, amazing wildlife and ancient ruins, so whatever you like to do on holiday, you’ll be able to do it in Sri Lanka. There is so much to see and do that one thing you can never be in Sri Lanka is bored!

Many couples from around the world choose to honeymoon in Sri Lanka – and once you’ve been here you’ll realise why. Sri Lanka is a really special place.

Intro1

Reason 2 – You can see Sri Lanka’s Big 4

During your holiday you can see what’s known as Sri Lanka’s Big 4 – a leopard, elephant, sloth bear and blue whale. There are some wonderful National Parks to visit - Willpattu and Minneriya National Parks in the north and Yala National Park in the south are highly recommended and are home to plenty of leopards, elephants and sloth bears as well as a whole host of other creatures. The Minneriya National Park is famous for the way its elephants gather together from May to October and for this reason it’s becoming a top tourist attraction.

Jeep safari tours are lots of fun and you’ll be able to take lots of amazing photos to show your friends and family back home. You’ll absolutely love going on a boat tour in Mirissa, Trincomalee or Kalpitiya to spot the blue whales.

Reason 3 –  There’s lots of opportunities to try new things

No holiday to Sri Lanka would be complete without a tour in a hot air balloon. You need to see the beauty of the country from the sky as well as from the ground, and a hot air balloon tour allows you to do just that. As you travel in the balloon over the plains you might see herds of elephants, deer and water buffalo, as well as ancient ruins and villages.

If you’re looking for something more active, then why not explore Sri Lanka by bike? There are plenty of cycling tours available. If you plan to cycle to a tea plantation in the mountains then take a jumper with you, it can get quite chilly. Make sure you try some of the curd from one of the roadside stalls you pass, it really is delicious eaten with honey. If you’re feeling adventurous you could go white-water rafting at Kitulgala or go surfing in Midigama and try The Lazy Left (a wave that angles to left and takes you close to some rocks).

If you want to explore towns and cities far away from your resort, then it’s doesn’t cost much to hire a car and driver to take you. The Sri Lankan people are very welcoming so don’t hesitate to ask for recommendations during your holiday.

Intro3

Reason 4 – The Cricket!

If you love cricket, then you simply must get involved and play a game or two while you’re in Sri Lanka. You’ll see plenty of people playing cricket during your holiday – they play on the beaches, on odd patches of grass… so why not ask if you can join in? If you prefer to watch, you could see if there are any international one-day or Twenty20 matches being played in Kandy or Colombo during the duration of your holiday.

If you aren’t keen on cricket and prefer playing golf then you could head to one of the golf courses in Colombo, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya instead.

Reason 5 – The resorts are amazing

They are some incredible resorts in Sri Lanka so you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing where to stay. You’ll be blown away by how luxurious some of the resorts are and you could have your own personal butler depending on the resort you pick!
